Veterans Ties to War Labor and Benefits Loom Large

READY FOR VETERANS By Jack Stinnett Washington The United States has faced wars but this one begins with an already running machinery to care for veterans. By last report 862 World War II veterans were in hospitals. now likely over 1,000. The Veterans Administration, created in 1930, runs 100 plus offices and facilities under Brig. Gen. Frank T. Hines. If current veterans numbers match World War I patterns, annual costs could reach about two to three billion dollars for veterans and dependents. Benefits already include service connected payments from ten to one hundred dollars monthly, medical care, hospitalization, and domiciliary care. Laws aim to guarantee job restoration for those drawn into service and to ease civil service entry for veterans. World War II veterans are projected to have a priority edge as peace returns, possibly shaping postwar job landscapes.
