A Pacific sailor dreamed of a West Amarillo Christian Church service on Sept. 25, in which a roll call named Jerold Knox of the U S Navy and his sister Joyce stood with a gray purse. The service honored church members in the armed forces. Knox’s mother, absent on a trip, was not present.
Mrs John Czingili wife of Lt Col Czingili assistant commandant of troops at Amarillo Field was seriously injured this morning while unloading supplies from a Red Cross car. An army bus backed into the car causing her fall. she was taken to the post hospital and remained in serious condition with chest and head injuries.
Mrs. Lee Wesley of Canyon received emergency treatment after a fan blade shattered and embedded in her side at her Canyon home. The blade flew into the room and caused injuries before she was released from the local hospital. She is the step-sister of Mrs M D O'Dell of Amarillo.
At Sportsmans Park St. Louis Oct 4 the Cardinals and Browns began batting practice under clearing skies for game one. Rain had threatened earlier but broke, and players prepared for the opening contest amid improving weather.
Alfred E. Smith a four time New York governor and 1928 Democratic presidential candidate died at 5 20 AM in Rockefeller Institute from lung congestion and heart failure. The East Side native and Brown Derby figure had been ill since August 10 and was transferred September 28 from St. Vincent's Hospital. President Roosevelt called Smith a true patriot after his death. He had slowed political activity in recent years but remained active with the Empire State Building and civic drives.
Strikes by 3,000 maintenance workers in over 11 Detroit area plants halt operations and send more than 50,000 workers home. The walkout targets Briggs Manufacturing, De Soto Chrysler, Kelsey-Hayes, Packard, Hudson, Bendix and others, threatening war production including B-29 and fighter components.
