Boston was named the 1930 champion city at the American Legion gathering in Visville Kentucky. The Los Angeles delegation urged a unanimous choice but withdrew as all signs favored Boston.

Two companies of national guardsmen were sent to East Marion after a riot at the Marion Textile Manufacturing Co plant in North Carolina. The clash between rival union factions and deputy sheriffs left two dead and 14 wounded, with Gov. Gardner asked to deploy troops for mill property protection.
At a city commission meeting Mayor Ernest O Thompson charged that two alligators from a fountain in Sanborn Park now in the city reservoir are eating fish there. George Williams, former city engineer, argued alligators reduce fish by preying on turtles, which supposedly dominate the lake’s ecology.
Detroit October 2 Jackie Thompson 56 son of Mr and Mrs Henry S Thompson has not been returned after a kidnapping at 6 pm Monday. Police report efforts to locate the two men and the automobile involved were fruitless but the father did not seem worried. He reportedly contacted the kidnappers yesterday but declined to discuss the affair with police.
A dynamite blast damaged the Lake Shore Athletic Club at 850 Lake Shore Drive in Chicago's Gold Coast. The $6 million club's natatorium window was blown out. police probe two theories: garage racketeering jealousy or rival cab drivers anger over club valet practices.
Lamar Colorado October 2 The desertion of two men who aided Ralph Fleagle in the First National Bank robbery and murders May 23 1928 leads Fleagle to order his attorney to desert his co defendants delaying the trial. The state seeks the death penalty for Abshier and Royston while Fleagle seeks to avoid execution. Fleagle is said to have 150 dollars.
Myrtle Bennett and Evelyn Helms, both unhappy with money and fame, killed their husbands after disputes over wealth and stage life. Bennett, 34, claimed self defense after her husband threatened to leave. Helms, 29, killed her vaudeville partner husband who refused to let her return to the road. Both are held on first degree murder charges with limited bail. Helms attempted suicide but failed. Bennett faces fortune and home disputes as a key factor in the case.
The National Grain Marketing Corporation a $20 million entity to aid grain farmers through cooperation with the Federal farm board could become a working reality within a week. William H. Settle of Indianapolis said a 16 cooperative subcommittee will act as directors if the farm board approves by-laws, with incorporation to follow in Delaware and operation within 30 days if policy consensus holds.
Amarillo representatives plan an auto caravan to the West Texas Chamber of Commerce regional meeting in Shamrock tomorrow. Mason King of the chamber says over twenty local members will travel from Amarillo at 7 am after arranging a barbecue and business sessions. The group will also discuss the W T C C convention set for October 24 to 26 in El Paso.

Chicago report on James Vlastnik 20 suing to stop his parents from taking his $65 weekly wages. He says they allocate $5 to him while $60 funds are spent on their luxuries, and he lacks funds for a new suit and shoes after 18 months. He seeks the court to order his parents to leave his money alone.

In Amarillo a magistrate named Homer Calloway describes a brawl at the palace of the dance. A warrior and a farm hand fought after a dispute over a woman leading to injuries. The peacemaker paid fifteen dollars, while the warrior faced ten. Officers removed the combatants.
Funeral services for Sloan Kritser Panhandle cattleman who died Monday night at his ranch 20 miles north of Amarillo were held at 3 oclock from the Masterson home. Washington officials including Congress and the White House felt the impact of a grand jury report on the mysterious death of Young McPherson and the arrest of her younger husband Robert A. McPherson Jr. Detectives Shelby and Kelly were reassigned amid accusations they tried to cover up the case while Hoover aide Walter A. Newton was drawn into the political fray.
A 1,600 man river levee crew worked as engineers reported the threat of a levee breach north of Augusta Georgia had diminished. Flood waters from a break four miles below were backing toward the city, but the impact was confined to about 100 blocks in the lower Savannah River area.
Sixteen hundred workers labored to shore up Augusta's 13 mile levee as River swelled to 46.6 feet with forecasts to 47 feet due to heavy rainfall. Meteorologist E B Emhigh warned of a likely breach threatening the business district while district engineer R B Howard ordered levee strengthening and residents in lowland areas urged to evacuate to higher ground. Backwater in the center city was expected to reach four feet by noon and power in the city was knocked out.
The Associated Press reports that as the tropical gale waned near the Virginia Capes, six additional deaths were recorded, raising the toll from Nassau Bahamas earlier to thirteen.
The tug Bakshe feared to be distressed with twelve men aboard two barges adrift after a hurricane. Carol Jones reported the tug’s position 23 miles west-northwest of Seahorse Florida. The Raleigh Warner from Mobile was expected to reach by dusk to tow to port.
