The Council of Churches led by Mrs Henry Cusick appeals for old clothes for European sufferers. City groups and schools participate by collecting worn garments and even minor repairs. Donations welcome at the Polk Street bus between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. rags also needed for armed forces.
Amarillo residents can now reserve tickets for the regional aviation conference on December 7 and 8. Tickets cost six dollars and include registration, two luncheons and a banquet. Rex Baxter of the Chamber of Commerce urges strong local turnout as national aviation authorities and attendees from six states are expected. The Chamber committee led by Herb Budke met to promote reservations.
Civilians and soldiers will join in the first community contract bridge tournament at the Auditorium with weekly classes for novices and beginners and a class for Culbertson enthusiasts. Private Leonard, a National Master with Amarillo Field, will conduct play at 7:30 PM with trophies awarded weekly and larger prizes as the season progresses.
Christmas seal booths are set up at the Amarillo Air Field for today’s sale. Mrs. Lawrence Hagg, chair of the Potter County Tuberculosis Association, notes the sale has run over a week with good response. The sale funds the association’s prevention and cure program and education efforts about combating tuberculosis, which ranks first among deaths for youth.

Amarillo city jail doors stand open for the first time in seven months. Police desk sergeant J A Kirkman says the jail is empty this morning and those jailed last night paid fines totaling 90 dollars.
Law enforcement officers from constables to FBI agents attended a Panhandle conference in Amarillo. A disarming demonstration by FBI Special Agent E. C. Dorris and talks by defense and prosecution attorneys framed the day, with sessions at Municipal Auditorium and a dinner at Herring Hotel.
Burial services for Homer Isaac Reynolds a World War 1 veteran who died yesterday while writing a telegram at the Western Union office will be held in his old home Liberal Kansas The body with sister Velda Rogenscrot will be sent to Liberal tonight by Boxwell Brothers Reynolds aged 47 had been discharged November 16 from a veterans hospital in Wichita Kansas
Mrs Claudine Campbell, hospitalized with pneumonia at Northwest Texas Hospital, remains in custody with husband Ralph H Campbell held in jail over a loot discovery valued in thousands. Police found valuables in the garage and home at 702 A Prospect. No charges filed yet. Also news: Lt Gen Alexander A Vandegrift named new commandant of the Marine Corps effective January 1, succeeding Lt Gen Thomas Holcomb.
Amarillo dog Buttons meets Postman Pete Easley in daily mail rounds. In Hutchinson Kansas, a rival canine Tiny the postman’s helper is described as energetic but not brains. Tiny chases cars and has been hit on route at least five times. He stays home during blizzards or extreme cold and waits at the bus stop on Sundays when the route is missed.
Lt. Jack Pittman Jr has finished combat duty in the South Pacific and is awaiting return to the United States. He writes his parents Mr and Mrs Jack Pittman of 1008 West Twentieth Avenue that he has served three combat tours and is now an ace pilot with the Fighting Falcon Squadron which has downed 74 Zeroes and dive bombers with only two ships lost. He says he will come back in as good condition as when he went in.
Two armed men robbed the J. W. Jolly Grocery at 611 East Third Avenue taking over 230 dollars from two of three white men. Police have no trace of the robbers. Earlier, Fletcher Cox was forced to surrender 11 dollars and a suitcase contents in a separate attack at 500 Grant Street.
The Amarillo Elks district meeting initiated the second largest class in state history led by George Strauss of Corpus Christi. Notables among 40 plus initiates included County Judge Noel McDade and Sheriff P F Younger of Dumas. Fire damaged the residence at 1510 East Ninth Avenue at 12:32 PM.
Prosty Hamrick, longtime county auditor and current member of the industrial accident board in Austin, revisited Amarillo to speak to the Panhandle A. & M. Club at the Capitol Hotel. He shared a tale of a friend who returned to Austin after flying 53 missions in the Mediterranean and who sought his car for a date.
The former county auditor recalls telling a man he could have the car but no gas. The man went to the ration board and secured five gallons, which he was told would cover his entire leave. He later said he had a further update.
