Dock violence leaves two near death in Port Arthur flare
In Port Arthur two independent dock workers Ed Hill and Harvey Polite were shot by buckshot as they left the longshoremen shelter. Hill is a stevedore and Polite a taxi driver. Hill’s wife witnessed the ambush and could not identify the shooters. About 20 shotgun rounds were fired. Striking longshoremen faced contempt of court charges in Sherman for alleged roles in a separate ambush on six workers near Orange. Six workers were wounded in that attack and 30 to 40 men allegedly involved were reportedly arrested and released on bond.
