Relief workers rushed to evacuate the Florida Keys after the Labor Day hurricane that killed about 400 veterans and others. A freak storm approached the coast between Miami and Palm Beach threatening more evacuations and danger.
William H. Green directs relief ops sending trucks to evacuate 200 men from Snake Creek area while 65 workers by boat head to join them. Widespread rainfall and gusty winds lash Miami Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. warnings extend from Palm Beach to Naples as the storm veers toward Florida after passing Abaco. News offices receive many storm inquiries.
Two inmates Alis Hall and Ed Starr, both in civilian clothes, escaped Huntsville State Prison after a ruse at the warden’s office. They scaled a wall and traversed roofs before leaving freely during visiting hours, prompting a manhunt led by prison officials.

Police say she tearfully admitted the act citing amorous meanderings and a tainted greeting to a cigar girl as the motive. A separate Longview note reports one year old William Wesley Smith drowned in a bucket of water while playing in a backyard.
The Panhandle recorded a new season low as the thermometer fell to 29 degrees. A brisk north wind brought fog and mist overnight, with earlier 32 degree readings tied as prior frost points this fall.

Lee O Cannon of Port Arthur Texas an assistant engineer on the tanker Gulf pride was evacuated from the vessel to Coast Guard Boat 126 near Cape Henry and then to the Marine hospital for injuries from the Cape Hatteras blow.

In White Bluff Tennessee Baxter Bell a 35 year old Black man was fatally shot by white men who riddled his body with bullets after an alleged insult to a white woman alighting from a bus last night.
Fort Worth dispatch reports California authorities will depart this afternoon for the Pacific Coast with William B. Shearer, cashier of the California state treasury, held as a fugitive from justice in connection with a $24,000 treasury shortage.
Emperor Haile Selassie told this AP correspondent in Addis Ababa that Ethiopia remains confident in victory over Italian invaders as his coronation anniversary was celebrated. He said the army is intact and pledged continued reforms funded by defense spending while asserting Ethiopia's right to grant an oil concession to any nation.
