The Polk Street Methodist church board voted to raise the pastor's salary to 5000 a year from 4500. Reverend Stanley W. Hayne, recently appointed to a Dallas church, completed four years at the local church. A successor will be named at the Northwest Texas conference in Canyon next week.
Philadelphia reports that Frederick J. Shoyer failed to win election as district attorney after former Judge John M. Patterson, the Republican nominee, died after gallstone surgery. Patterson died within five hours of polls closing as returns showed Patterson 167,526 votes to Shoyer 123,616 and Democrat William E. Krennan with 75,755. Officials expect court action to resolve the unprecedented result.
The Louisville Times reports 75 Republican workers plan to sue the Louisville Times for criminal libel, each seeking 50 000 damages totaling 3 750 000, based on yesterday’s published charges. The Courier Journal notes slugging and shootings as Republicans win mayor in Louisville, with Will defeating O Neal by 55 337 to 53 TOK, amid fraud contest threats. Oilman Ed Mayer of the Johnson Ranch Royalty company predicts major activity in the coming year as Prairie company starts a new well northwest of the first Prairie producer. Wells are expected to total at least twenty five on the Johnson ranch within twelve months amid extensive lease holdings and rapid development.
Lee Satterwhite speaker of the house, back from Austin, says a special legislative session seems necessary but will not be called until after Christmas. He adds that the calling depends entirely on actions of the attorney general.
San Francisco rejected a plan to buy the Market Street Railway for 36 million dollars. Joab H. Banton, Democrat, was reelected district attorney in New York City, defeating former Governor Charles E. Whitman. Albert I. Beach, Republican, narrowly won re election as mayor of Kansas City by 421 votes, with 57,441 for Beach and 57,920 for Democrat Ben S. Jaudon, longtime city treasurer.
C. McCormick, a dairyman living east of Amarillo, recently purchased a fine registered Holstein bull from the Texas A M college herd.
The Coffee Shop at the Amarillo Hotel is designated Famous For Food serving guests and locals. The Panhandle’s meeting place is featured as a notable dining spot within the hotel.
Hollywood reports Rudolph Valentino left for New York and London denying he is visiting his wife Winifred Hudnet. He says she may be in New York from Paris by his arrival and adds he will not see her. He plans a Christmas in Italy and a return early next year.
Ground was broken today for a $25 000 addition to the Amarillo Laundry at 300 Harrison street. The project, led by Fred Bona Construction, adds 4 by 135 feet of frontage, enlarging the plant to 105 by 270 feet and housing rug cleaning and other departments. Bob Ames, founder of Kwitcherkikkin fame, predicts rapid growth for Amarillo and expansion of his business.
The San Jacinto Pole Cats faced a potential riot after a Johnson school group appeared. Principal C. C. Walden summoned police when threats arose. officers restored order as larger Johnson players weighed up to 180 pounds.
Stockholders of the Ranch Creek Oil and Gas company meet in the National Bank of Commerce directors room at 10 a.m. to liquidate the company and divide 90000 among shareholders. The Associated Press reports Democrats won the New Jersey governor race and the New York City mayoral contest. Harry Moore carried New Jersey with about 40,000 votes, while James J. Walker led a Democratic victory in New York City with roughly 380,000 margin. Stewart Appleby won the third New Jersey district seat.
New York trading on the stock exchange shattered twenty year volume records with over 2,800,000 shares traded, surpassing the prior peak of 2,702,600 set on October 16. U S Steel common led gains, leaping more than five points to a high of 134 ½, the best level since 1917.
