The family of the drowned boy, AL LOULAILLIER reports, contributed $800 to the center handling the case. The donation was announced as part of a relief effort and to support ongoing services for affected families.
Parents of Rupert Arthur Ogg 10 who drowned at Amarillo Youth Center pool turned $1,000 of a liability settlement over to the center to fund new water safety equipment. The remaining $200 will support the Lobo team Kids Inc and Boy Scout Troop 18.
Amarillo area expected scorching heat as 96 degrees tops the forecast for today with a high of 82 tomorrow. Overnight thundershowers mostly north of town left trace moisture, while brief south region activity and winds up to 25 mph were noted. Rainfall reports include Dalhart .17 inches and Vega .04 inches, with other spots recording smaller amounts.
The Weather Bureau reports partly cloudy skies across Amarillo and West Texas with scattered thunderstorms tonight and Friday. Expect cooler conditions Friday after today’s warmth. Highs reach 82 in the Panhandle, 94 noted earlier with a 67 low. traces of rain. Also noted are light showers in New Mexico and widespread showers statewide. Fourteen year old Aaron Hart, delivery boy for Skelton Drug Store, died after a motor scooter was struck on Georgia Street near Thirty sixth Avenue. The accident, near US 87 on FM 288, occurred about 11 30 PM. Chester Johns, 50, is in custody. the twinned tragedy follows the father’s fatal work accident on Oct 16 during construction of the West Eighth Avenue overpass. Aaron, a McKinley School seventh grader, is survived by his mother Lollie Hart and four brothers plus a sister. Funeral arrangements pending.
Washington May 31 Admiral Forrest P Sherman told a Senate inquiry the Kremlin could end the Korea war at any time and may do so as the U S grows stronger He modified his earlier call for a UN naval blockade of Red China saying the economic bloc should be tested first He cited Pentagon fears of a world war last December and outlined discussions with Gen J Lawton Collins about armistice terms and potential limits on air actions against China
In Vancouver on May 31 U P report, multi millionaire Bing Crosby and Bill Morrow are refused rooms at Hotel Vancouver due to clerk impression of Crosby as a bum. After outside talk they are guided to twin suites on the seventh floor by bellhop Ray Morrison.
A hometown circus featuring bankers, truck drivers, doctors and housewives opens Friday night at Tri-State Fair Park Pavilion with two shows at 8 o clock. The Gainesville Community circus, the third largest in the nation, donates proceeds to Crippled Children's Council and Lions Youth Welfare Fund. Now in its 21st year, the show started in 1930 and has grown into a coordinated act with aerialists, clowns, trained animals, and new equipment worth over $15,000 added this season. Flying trapeze and high wire acts highlight the program. United Nations on Parade is also planned.
Martin Aulbach led the PGA flight at Amarillo Country Club after nine holes of the 31st Texas PGA Tournament with a 34 while George Aulbach posted 36 to hold a one stroke edge. Open flight contender Dick Martin topped the field early with a 34, as several players hovered near the lead including Erwin and J C Hardwicke, Tucker Bowles, Adams, Tesreau Davis, Parra and Billy Erfurth.
KGNC will broadcast the 31st annual Texas PGA championship rounds nightly at 11:05 with two Saturday and two Sunday afternoon play-by-play telecasts. Semi finals and finals air Saturday and Sunday at 3 to 3:30 and 5:30 to 5:45.
At El Toro Marine Base California May 31 Marine airmen unveiled the Douglas Skynight F3D a long range jet fighter bomber touted as the world first two placement interceptor capable of night day or poor weather. Lt Col Lambrecht said it could provide 24 hour interceptor and close air support. Captain Lang praised its quiet handling and ease of control while test pilot Willie How One described the craft as sensitive and temperamental yet capable of loitering at mid range altitude for close air support.
Houston May 31 The Keystone Packing Company and its Sales affiliate Crown Packing Company closed their doors for business. Mor ris H. Cohen president said people have stopped buying meat and the price is too high due to a consumer boycott, leaving no profit.
King Saunders told police a burglar entered his typewriter shop and made off with a single item a 38 dollar check protector a gadget used to prevent check alteration.
The United States Britain and France challenged Russia to attend a four power foreign ministers meeting in Washington on July 23 to discuss global tensions. The notes blame the stalemate on Russia over agenda items including the North Atlantic alliance and US bases in Europe. The West offered three alternative agendas including a split agenda, and remains ready to meet on that basis or the others.
Richard W. McGee, 26, convicted slayer, was sentenced by Judge Daniel A. Blair to die in the electric chair before sunrise of July 3 in Lubbock. He killed R. L. Allston, 42, over McGee’s interest in Allston’s daughter Betty Jane, 18, on July 7, 1948, after spending nearly three years in jail. His mother and sister cried as he faced the sentence and declared, “Briefly, I’m dying.”
Former Lt. William H. Evans Jr. says a majority of Far East fighters share his view that the State Department is the enemy behind the enemy, while Adm. Sherman rejects the claim. Evans produced the letter at Kohlberg's hotel, stating his duty to publish it after commission revocation following loyalty questions.

Charlene Meredith of Amarillo is the only known graduate from a government Indian school this year. At Chilocco Indian Agricultural School in Oklahoma she earned a diploma this week and described daily life, tribal practices, and the school’s six dormitories and dining rooms.
Secretary Thomas K. Finletter said most US Air Force tactical units, now over 50 groups, will join the North Atlantic defense force. He rejected frittering away the strategic bomber role in Korea’s extension and urged overseas bases for medium bombers despite advances in B-36 and newer international heavy bombers and guided missiles.
The speaker warned that current U S air defense cannot guarantee immunity from atomic attack and that the Communists are converting to jets. He explained tactical air forces support ground troops near the front and differ from interceptor and strategic bombers, with plans to align most tactical air with the North Atlantic Defense force under the NATO framework.
