141 Graduates At Buchanan School Commencement

One hundred and forty one Buchanan School pupils graduated from seventh grade in a Wednesday night ceremony held in the school auditorium. Rev. F. A. Foster delivered the invocation. Valedictorian Drucilla Adelman and salutatorian Emma Lou Leitner led a list of graduates and participants including Panola Pankratz, Verlie Mae Gentry, Pat Devine, Evebell Warren, Marilyn Horton, and Marjorie Welch among others, with awards presented by E. L. Hunter and E. R. Cox.

Underpass work details and contract figures at Buchanan Street

The ceremony will feature Oren Speer and A E Dyatt overseeing the grade separation project. The Buchanan Street underpass received $390 000 from the federal Bureau of Public Roads, with the Speer bid at $315,899 and about $70 000 extra from railroads. The city financed damage claims. construction used 2 250 000 pounds of steel, 8 500 cubic yards of concrete, and 137 327 man hours. Indirect lighting includes 150 fixtures for the four traffic lanes.

The underpass extends 1,541 feet end to end as part of a trio of openings in Amarillo. A city swimming pool will open tomorrow with free swimming all day, and the fishing season starts at City Lake tomorrow morning.

Floods in New Mexico cause estimated damages of 400000 to 500000 dollars in Pecos River Valley. About 10000 acres of farm land near Roswell and Artesia inundated ruining much of the cotton crop. Some 60 families seek shelter with neighbors. A 13 year old boy Frankie Oldham drowns in a pool near Tucumcari. Main highways open though area conditions remain poor. Texas Highway 60 near Hereford to Clovis blocked travel rerouted via Panhandle Auto Club.

Witnesses Describe Breaking of Palo Duro Club Dam

Witnesses Dewey Ashcroft Ed Bagot and Dean White Amarillo sportsmen watched as the Palo Duro Club dam gave way after afternoon rain. The north apron washed away then the main dam collapsed in 20 foot sections. Thousands of fish were swept away while Palisades nearby remained intact and recorded a flood height reaching the bridge floor.
