A judgment by Judge McCormick condemns bribery in a cash deal over oil properties once handed to a donor by Secretary Fall. The piece attacks public corruption, notes appeals to higher courts, and compares wealth to religious influence, mentioning Fosdick and Rockefeller.
Flaggs the new town in the Panhandle near Kimball is to be christened Saturday June 29 with a big basket picnic, speeches, games and farm tours. John Fain leads arrangements for land sales in Plage and Flagg farm lands as Amarillo welcomes a ninth Panhandle town with a hotel lumberyard and stores planned.
In Lufkin Texas May 1 Westlay Seale 45 and his wife died by suicide at their home as their 1 year old watched. Mrs Seale fired first and, as she fell, Seale grabbed the pistol and killed himself. Domestic trouble was blamed by officers.
Shamrock reports two more real producing wells in Wheeler county. Whittington No. 4 near the discovery No. 2 shows promising output in good formation, while the Tex homa well northwest of the city is also a good prospect. Officials say gauge results will come later. enthusiasm rises as drilling continues in the Shamrock field.
Toney Chisum announces a price cut on the Essex effective today. The Essex now sells at $1000 delivered in Amarillo, down from $1045 at the factory and Amarillo. Chisum cites high production driving the lower cost per car. A W Moore, Essex manager, calls it the greatest automobile buy for the money and notes rising local demand.
Amarillo honors its heroes with flags at half mast and floral wreaths at graves. Judge Newton P. Willis of Canadaian delivered the address to a several hundred crowd led by Congressman Marvin Jones. Rev. P. O Malarkey gave the invocation as a music program accompanied the observance.
The Globe launches a Beautiful Homes contest with cash prizes across classifications to motivate cleaning and painting the city. The paper funds the effort with a $50 subscription, urging residents to beautify Amarillo and help advertise a well kept city. Mayor Bivins backs deposits and city involvement to support the campaign.
The article reports that Mrs. Collier was denied a request for a new trial after a ten year penitentiary sentence for complicity in the death of her son in law Elzie Roberson. She posted $10,000 bond and was granted liberty pending appeal as her husband and she left for Wiehire Falls following a week long trial. An additional appeal remains pending over a separate three year manslaughter sentence connected to Frank Collier.
Governor Frank O. Lowden of Illinois will speak at the 1926 West Texas Chamber of Commerce convention in Amarillo in May. R Q Lee as Cises, president, and Porter Whaley plan to review convention details with city officials. the event is slated to be the largest in the nation.
C J Woods of St. Petersburg Florida and J J Galliher of Graham Texas acquire an interest in the Western Packing company. Woods plans to move his family to Amarillo and reside here. The packing house opened a week ago and has slaughtered hundreds of cattle and hogs.
North Amarillo and The Globe sponsor a large social at Buchanan Street Methodist on Thursday night at seven. It is the second in a series of get acquainted meetings by The Globe force with speeches and novelty acts, followed by refreshments served by church ladies. The Globe orchestra will play as Globe employees are introduced.
United Press reports rising waters of the Rio Grande threaten to go out of bounds by morning. Lower valley towns including Mission Rio Grande City Brownsville and nearby points fear cotton crops along the river may suffer serious damage though hope remains that the river stays within banks.
Local note describes a community barbecue planned at the Arding Ranch related to the Kimball Tolzien music group. It invites participation with casual weather assurances and street talk about outdoor gathering.
Detectives arrested three men outside the Pickford Parrhanke studio after a written confession alleged a plot to kidnap Mary Pickford and other stars for a ransom of 290000 dollars. The trio allegedly targeted Pola Negri and Buster Keaton among others in a claimed abduction scheme.
The Panhandle saw scattered showers with light rain from Canyon to Panhandle and along the Rock Island lines. Amarillo recorded about 1 inch of precipitation at midnight with heavier showers south and east of the city.
Mojica arrives in Amarillo Monday to set temporary headquarters for a series of Panhandle and South Plains concerts. His manager asks visitors not to see him Monday to rest after a strenuous trip and schedule. He heads to Plainview Tuesday night then Lubbock Wednesday.
