W H Fuqua, longtime Panhandle financier and former president of First National Bank Amarillo, died at St Anthony's Hospital at 2 45 am age 87. Born in Tupelo Mississippi in 1862 he built a banking and land empire in Amarillo from the 1890s onward. Surviving relatives include daughter in law grandsons and granddaughters. Funeral set for Thursday at First Baptist Church with burial in Llano Cemetery.

Parsons Wins Memorial Day 500 Mile Race in Rain Stop
Johnny Parsons won the 34th Memorial Day 500 mile race in Indianapolis after a rain storm halted the event at 340 miles. Parsons, 31, from Van Nuys California, set a record pace of 124.002 mph for the 345 miles, taking his first speedway victory after finishing second last year to Bill Holland of Reading, Pennsylvania. Holland aimed for a second straight 500 mile title as the rain ended the race.

Rose's car catches fire in Memorial Day race in Indianapolis
