Timed Bombs Hit Lubbock Theaters In Overnight Attacks

Woman Dies When Plane Hits River

A Portland woman identified as Mrs. W. W. Smith about 25 perished when a mail passenger plane crashed into the Willamette River shortly after taking off from Swan Island for Seattle. Pilot Dick Gleason suffered serious injuries and was rescued by a harbor patrol boat. Initial reports fluctuated about two women aboard, but Swan Island officials later confirmed Mrs. Smith was the sole passenger.

Probation Up For Final Test In Texas Proration Suit

About 300 veterans from World War I and II era remained in Washington to press Congress for their bonus. Led by Walter W. Waters they pledged to stay until payment is approved. Police and veterans aided the indefinite stay as army kitchens and sleeping gear were requisitioned.

Death by Strangulation in White Deer Barn

B O Bertrand, 50, was found dead by his wife in a barn near White Deer as suicide by hanging, the coroner ruled. He had been ill three months and suffered a recent nervous breakdown. survivors include a widow, four children, and two daughters living in Oklahoma and Texas. Funeral arrangements pending.

Mrs. Nettie Ward, Llano County ranch owner, remained in an Austin hospital after a shotgun wound to neck and hands at her Llano home. Rufus Deats Jr., her son in law, was jailed with no charges filed yet as the investigation continues and Mrs. Ward’s daughter testified as a witness.

Memorial Day Observance Quiet in Amarillo

Memorial Day in Amarillo featured a city observance and flag protocol at half mast then raised. Banks and offices closed except for one mail run and essential services while courts and city offices remained open. Amarillo attorney James O Guleke urged reconsecration of the ideas behind the war dead as veterans groups attended at Llano Cemetery. Gold Star Mothers were honored as the high school cadet corps fired a salute near the flagpole. Music came from the senior high band directed by Charles Whittington.

Survivor in Court After Fatal Highway Crash

Horace Miles of Amarillo faces a charge of failure to stop and render aid in the March 13 crash that killed Pat Hooker and Ruby Lawrence and seriously injured Mrs. Seymour. Trial began in 47th district court with Judge Bishop to charge the jury. A chicken theft case against W L Bird followed after.
