Gleason Takes Early Lead In Indianapolis 500 Race

At Indianapolis Motor Speedway 135000 fans watched Jimmy Gleason of Philadelphia lead at halfway in the 500 mile race. He clocked 2 25 43.63 for 1250 miles at 102.932 mph, breaking the track record set by Peter De Paolo in 1925. Leon Daray led early but stopped for fuel and tires.

Italia Rescue Plan Continues In Polar Search

In Oslo and Spitsbergen on May 30 the Italia rescue effort presses on despite a request to delay. Captain Riiser Larsen plans to depart Bergen for Spitzbergen with a Dornier seaplane fleet ready for deployment. The Citta Di Milano base ship returned to King's Bay empty handed and will renew the search when the Hobby arrives from Norway.

Quiet marks a holiday here in Amarillo

A quiet Decoration Day observed in Amarillo with Col Charles Lindbergh visiting briefly. Hundreds placed flowers at graves as members of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion and United Spanish War Veterans planned later ceremonies. Trips to Oklahoma City and Tulsa, races at Tri-State Fairgrounds, and a Santa Fe ball game filled the holiday. Banks and offices closed though many stores stayed open.

Yale Students Riot In Attempt To Free Arrested

About 200 Yale students rioted in New Haven to free six classmates jailed after a street clash. Police used reserves after windows were broken and bricks and missiles flew from Fayerweather and Wright Hall areas. Six students were named among the arrestees as the melee culminated with arrests and campus confinement.
