Reed Opposes Postmaster Salary Increase Plan

Senator Reed of Kansas fought a Senate floor battle against a bill raising postmasters salaries by five to twenty percent. He denounced the measure as rewarding negligent officials amid wasteful service and cited a surge in overtime costs, totaling 67 557 000 this year versus 10 396 000 in 1942. Despite Republican opposition, lawmakers predicted Senate passage, arguing the change fits a wartime overtime extension already added by a House Senate conference panel. Reed argued the raises would violate the Little Steel formula alongside a $300 wartime bonus already authorized for postal workers.
