Opponents named include Earle B Mayfield Tom Connally and Alvin Owsley.
At Kings Bay Spitzbergen May 24 General Umberto Nobile circled the North Pole after midnight aboard the Italia. The dirigible reached the pole at 12 25 am and dropped a flag cross blessed by the Pope and guide ropes. A landing was not attempted due to conditions. plans to drop Trajani and Malmren were scrubbed.

In Washington four presidential vetoes were overridden in the Senate. The measures include two postal bills granting extra pay and allowances, the Oddie road program on Western public lands, and Tyson-Fitzgerald allowing retired World War emergency officers the same status as regular officers. Voting totals ranged from 63 to 17 to 66 to 14.
The Tyson Fitzgerald emergency officers retirement bill passed the Senate 66 to 14, over the President's veto. The House must act to finalize. King of Utah was the only Democrat to sustain the veto. 22 Republicans joined 43 Democrats and Shipstead to override. Listed Republicans voting yes included Bingham, Borah, Curtis, Fess, Gillett, Greene, Metcalf, Norris, Phipps, Reed, Smoot, Warren, and Waterman.
The Senate failed to muster the two thirds required to pass the Steck bill after overriding presidential vetoes on four other measures. The move would have created a new army rank for bandmasters.
Washington May 24 Adjournment of Congress at 5 p m next Tuesday proposed in a resolution by Speaker Longworth and Republican Floor Leader Tilson. The measure awaits approval by both chambers before taking effect.
