In Rockford Illinois on May 23 police clashed with United Automobile Workers pickets guarding the J I Case plant. Rayford Lee Hobbs 22 adopted son of J. R. Lawrence was found shot at home 1104 Bell aire Street. Inquest verdict ruled suicide with a small caliber rifle held to his ear. investigators could not determine motive. Survived by brother Richard D. Hobbs. body at Blackburn Shaw Funeral Home awaiting arrangements.
In Duluth Minnesota on May 23 police used tear gas and night sticks to break a 300 to 500 strong picket line around the Duluth Herald and News Tribune. Officers said lawful picketing could continue but the circular formation was illegal. The strike began April 3 over a guild shop.
