Gen Dalton Killed by Japanese Sniper in Luzon

Brig. Gen James L Dalton age 35, one of the army’s youngest generals, was killed by a Japanese sniper near Balete Pass on Northern Luzon. MacArthur announced the death, noting Dalton’s distinction and intrepidity. His body was buried at Santa Barbara cemetery near Binalonan, 100 miles north of Manila.

Returning To Mines In Pennsylvania After Walkout

Most of Pennsylvania's 72,000 hard coal miners returned to work. Anthracite mines in District Seven near Hazleton and District One around Wilkes-Barre reported operations resumed, with 38,000 and 15,000 miners respectively. Daily production was about 190 60 tons after a May 1 contract expiration, as John L. Lewis ordered deactivation.

Judge Wilson Convenes Federal District Court

Federal court sessions open this morning with Judge James C. Wilson presiding. The docket includes civil non-jury cases with trials set this week and the week of June 4. Morgan's Miracle

Lt John Morgan of Amarillo and the Eighth Air Force describes surviving a Flying Fortress explosion at 20 000 feet during the Berlin daylight raid in June 1944. He recalls being ejected with his parachute, landing in a tree, then on his feet after a three mile fall. Morgan spent 14 months in German POW camps before liberation by Soviet forces at Stalag Luft I.

Murder Charge Filed in Slaying of Taxi Driver Beck

Marvin Duffie faced murder charges after Beck died from three stab wounds to the abdomen. Duffie was released on a 5000 bond set by Justice of the Peace Co V Carder, and surrendered to police. Beck, a taxi driver, collapsed at his home at 1205 North East Sixteenth after returning with a grazing cow. A butcher knife was found at Duffie’s home.

A tip about a dog killing after a chicken killing won the $5 first News Tip prize last week for Kenneth Graves. The second prize of $3 went to Mrs. Helen Ellis for information about a lieutenant drowning at Buffalo Lake. third prize of $2 was won by Mrs. W. E.
