Weeds Boost Cattle Weight At Amarillo Experiment Station
At Amarillo Experiment Station near Bushland yearlings on weeds and grasses gained 2.6 pounds daily over 28 days with some calves hitting 3 pounds. Ten yearlings grazed 80 acres feeding on blue grama buffalo grass and native wild rye, while others on lake grass with wild rye gained 19 pounds daily on 40 acres. Weeds and native rye drive early greening. larger weed-rich pastures produced higher gains. The 51 yearlings were weighed every 21 days to assess pasture effects and plan replanted range comparisons. Station director Dr. C J Whitfield said gains exceeded expectations and weeds may produce beef.
