His mother, a nurse, pleaded with the jury to spare him a penitentiary sentence.
In Houston on May 19 a burglar was held at gunpoint for fourteen minutes by Mrs. J. M. Williamson who admitted she did not know how to shoot. She confronted the thief in a bed chamber, seized a pistol, forced him to the back yard, and held him until police arrived.
Hillcrest Country Club directors awarded a contract to Glenn Kendrick for the club house at 11300 dollars. The building will include lockers parlors for the ladies a hall for dancing smoking rooms and wide verandas. The Hillcrest golf course draws state wide attention for beauty and orderly layout.
Philadelphia May 19 The nomination of Congressman Willson Vare for senator on the Pennsylvania Republican ticket was added today by Governor Pinchot who said Vare has won and I have lost Senator Pepper declined to comment until the official count. In the governor race Edward F Beidleman led the field with John S Fisher Thomas W Phillips Jr and John K Tener following.

A severe wind and hail storm, first of the season in the Midwest, hit Illinois and Indiana causing three deaths including an aviator. The storm damaged homes, sheds, and roofs, toppled trees and poles, disrupted communications, and left $500,000 in losses. Harvey Chicago suburb saw a seventy mile tornado path two blocks wide.
Amarillo realtors led a noon meeting at the Amarillo hotel urging citywide cooperation to fund a special Tulsa train trip. Ninety people from forty firms have volunteered as the drive seeks 125 volunteers to complete funding for the rail excursion set for June 7, with plans for a large welcome in Tulsa and a strategic highway route via Amarillo.
Dallas May 19 Arguments on the constitutionality of the state medical practice act are to be heard Thursday in Fort Worth before a three judge tribunal to be organized by Federal Judge James C. Wilson.
Funeral services for Bonnie Marie Britain fourteen daughter of Mr and Mrs EF C Britain of 1300 Monroe Street will be held tomorrow at 3 30 PM at Polk Street Methodist Church with Rev Lewis N Stuckey officiating. She died Tuesday morning at the family home following brief illness of pneumonia and burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.
W. E. D. Stokes financier and hotel owner, long in the public eye for a sensational divorce suit against his wife Helen Elwood Stokes, died at his home 258 West 73rd Street. He was 37 and succumbed to double pneumonia after a week of illness.
The city commission approved an increased Board of City Development budget from 24000 to 43800 dollars after a joint conference with the commission. Board president Till Gatton and secretary Goodwin welcomed the action, saying it enables an intensive campaign to attract major industries to Amarillo.
Fort Worth reports say Mrs. Mary Brown a 19 year old from Cross Plains was hurled from an automobile on Caron Road near Fort Worth shortly before midnight. She remained unconscious at a hospital but is expected to recover. She was accompanied by another couple in the car and said she came to Fort Worth four days ago.
Ossie Carlton winner of the 1925 championship led the early qualifiers in the Twentieth annual Championship tournament of the Texas Amateur Golf association at River Oaks Country club. He shot 74 for medalist potential, going out 41 and back 33, with nine holes left to finish.
E M Pittman county clerk J N Riggs and Walter Allen returned yesterday from Tallis where they attended a state convention of the United Commercial Travelers. Mr Allen was elected governor of the association. The convention lasted two days.
A military official reports French troops have advanced about a mile on a twenty mile Rif front in a morning push. The update comes from Pérez in French Morocco dated May 19.
In Birmingham a large gathering of 3500 gray uniformed Confederate veterans opened the thirty sixth reunion. Many are aged, bent or on crutches as they listened to General Freeman declare the group will continue to meet annually. Geo W Breenia urged disbanding the Confederacy as an organization, while the crowd resisted and remained hopeful for future gatherings.
Amarillo rally centers on opposition to out of state control of Texas oil. Davidson denounces legislation allowing outside firms to enter through Texas corporations and warns of Standard Oil monopoly threatening resources and prices. He cites Hogg antitrust repeal and touts plans for safeguards and a Texas based business administration. He campaigns across Canyon Plainview and East Texas on governor bid.
