Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox reports American forces have captured a ridge south of Holtz Bay on Attu, breaking a main enemy center. He says casualties are lighter than expected as two American columns push toward Holtz Bay, with a pincers operation possible.
The Senate agriculture committee voted 8 to 2 to back legislation by Senator Thomas to prohibit setting a floor price for raw cotton below 25 cents per pound. The bill would stop government owned cotton from selling under 23 1/2 cents until the value reaches 25 cents.
Johnnie Eugene Marler a 23 year old United States Marine recalls his Guadalcanal battle experiences. He claims to have killed 124 Japanese including two women snipers and shows war souvenirs such as a 36 inch sword with ivory sheath and captured combat gear. He says he intends to raise his total to 200 and recounts injuries including a severed trigger finger and a throat wound.
The bulletin notes occasional afternoon rains and cool to night conditions through Wednesday morning with moderate to fresh winds. Russian troops repulsed a German attack in the Kuban near Novorossiysk, killing over 100 Nazis as fronts saw light fighting. Soviets claimed destroying Axis tanks, 13 machine gun nests, and three trench mortar batteries, with Junkers-87s and other planes shot down.
London May 18 United States Eighth Air Force announced it destroyed 121 German planes in three days of operations last week. The tally reflects heavy Allied air activity over occupied Europe with bombers and fighters contributing to the losses.
Judge Marvin Jones head of the U S delegation was nominated by unanimous vote of the Steering committee to be permanent chairman of the United Nations food conference opening tonight. The ratification rests with the conference. Jones had been temporary chairman designated by President Roosevelt. He long led the House Agriculture Committee and would direct efforts to use food for peacetime world health.
The Soviet information bureau reports British air attacks on German industrial centers causing heavy losses and population panic. The Moscow broadcast notes letters from German soldiers show the impact on morale on the Russian front.
Cronkite reports the Ruhr flood caused by RAF dam blasts as Germanys worst wartime disaster with thousands drowned and cities inundated. Nazis declare siege. floods disrupt rail, docks, power plants across Westphalia Ruhr and Hanover regions.
Swedish dispatch via Ny Dag, cited by OWI, reports Italian troops in Jugoslavia deserting in large numbers amid demoralization after North African defeats. Shooting of 12 soldiers at Korveeo and 200 desertions near Novamesto in April are noted, with many others joining guerrilla bands as Italy closes its Jugoslavian border and Germany bars the frontier.
