Nine bandits robbed Farmers Bank and First National Bank of Beggs Oklahoma on May 18 killing Marshal W J McAnalay and wounding Mrs Campbell. Matthew Kimes named by bank officials as leader. loot around four thousand dollars with jewelry. bandits fled west in two cars. posse pursuit.
Temple, May 18. Monroe Fisher, charged with murder in the death of Albert W. Bonds, was wounded when someone fired a shotgun at his automobile. Birdshot struck his face and arms but his injuries were not serious. Police arrested a man. no charges filed. Authorities say the shooting is not linked to the Bonds Fisher feud, in which Bonds and Wiley Fisher have died, and Monroe and Johnnie Fisher, sons of the former Temple police chief, are charged with murder.
The forecast calls for tonight and Thursday to be partly cloudy and cooler. Historical highs and lows from today last year were 57 and 14 degrees, with hourly readings reaching 68 at 7 am up to 87 by 10 pm.
A noon encounter on Polk street saw an ambulance and a motorcycle officer race at no less than 60 mph to Little Mexico where a Mexican man was shot in the leg. City leaders, officials, and business people criticized the reckless speed and urged action to stop such street exhibitions.
Two major meetings with aligned aims are set for Friday and Saturday. The Panhandle Grain Dealers meet Friday at the municipal auditorium with a noon luncheon at the Herring hotel, while Saturday the Southwest Shippers Advisory board convenes at the same venue. Attendance is expected to exceed 200 for grain dealers and about 500 for shippers.
President Coolidge has recovered from the cold that sent him to bed Monday afternoon. He resumed his executive office hours at the usual time this forenoon.
Police answered a burglary call last night and found thirty eight gallons of whisky twenty five gallons of wine and two cases of beer. J A Moorehead was arrested on liquor charges in Justice of Peace G Landis court. A second raid yielded thirty six gallons of whisky and several arrests are expected.
On May 18 New Orleans reports the Mississippi valley flood flooding Lebau village and Acadian towns. Ten feet of water covers streets while fort Lafitte’s old site may be flooded within a week. Plantations in the Sugar Bowl area are spared per engineers.
Detroit May 18 A new four cylinder Ford with gear shift will be available around August 1. Theodore W Kolbe secretary of the police department told the city council the department sought approval to purchase 111 old style Model T Fords at a discount. Martin B Hansz vice president and manager of Detroit Motor Sales Ford dealers confirmed samples by August and said 60 days to deliver a large order. Old parts will be made for five years.
In Los Angeles on May 18 Cornelius Deasy filed for divorce after his wife Moneta testified she was bitten by the Ask me another craze. She said the game led to disputes such as queen of Monroevie and how high is up. She hid his question book in defense and was whipped when refused. Mrs. Deasy was granted a decree.
National culinary expert Mia Chitwood lectured to hundreds of Amarillo and Panhandle women detailing salad techniques and broader cooking concepts. Her five day series covers lemon pie, chocolate fudge cake, salads, vegetables and desserts, biscuits, meat decorations, and decorative rose plates, with recipes drawn from her laboratories and travels.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed Yancey Story’s 0 percent year sentence for a June 1925 Krum bank robbery. Extraneous testimony about other Denton county robberies was deemed prejudicial and the case was remanded to Dallas County for trial on venue grounds.
United Press reports a Washington conference among Lloyd Bertaud Charles Levine and associates to resolve contract and weather issues threatening the Bellanca Paris flight. Byrd organization prepares for weight tests while Lindbergh eyes another test flight as Byrd crew reports satisfactory Fokker tests despite forecasts of poor weather.
Bath Michigan May 18 a dynamite blast destroyed the west wing of the consolidated school as students gathered. Ten sticks were found under the east wing with burning fuses. Three adults are confirmed dead and scores of pupils injured or missing as rescue teams search the debris.
Twenty two dead, mostly in the Bath improvised morgue, were identified by authorities and parents. Names listed include Floyd Burnett, Lloyd Zimmerman, Robert Bramont, Emma Nichols, Iona Hart, Earl Ewing, Elizabeth Mitchell, Loren Hunter, Nelson McFarren, Richard Richardson, Andrew Kehoe, Robert Hart, Thelma McDonald, Kenneth Foote, and others.
Rescue workers struggled to reach children as timbers pinned victims in a west wing collapse. Mothers were restrained from entering the wreckage while crews evacuated injured students to Lansing hospitals. Three men named Kehoe Huyck are believed dead.
