Argentine beef packing wages and prices compared with American packers
Labor department data show Argentine packing workers earn about half to three quarters of American wages. Argentine packers buy a higher grade meat for canning due to a limited fresh meat market, while only lower American beef grades are canned. February prices ranged from 1.99 to 2.46 dollars per hundred pounds for mixed steers with skilled butchers earning 1.55 to 6.25 dollars per day. Edward A. O Neal cites Navy purchases of Argentine corn beef as triggering the dispute.
