Noted screen and stage performer Ernest Torrence died at Lenox Hill Hospital at dawn after gall bladder surgery. Born in Edinburgh he rose from concert pianist to opera singer to Broadway star before film fame in The Covered Wagon and The Night Boat. He is survived by his wife Ilse Reamer, son Ernest Jr, and brothers.
