Four year old Mary Ellen Childers suffered severe injuries when a plank used as a clothesline crosspiece was knocked down and splinters pierced her intestines. An emergency operation at St Anthony’s Hospital removed two slivers and doctors said she had a fair chance of recovery.
Examinations for civil service positions at Amarillo Air Force Base are announced to recruit for carpenters woodworkers aircraft woodworkers sheetmetal workers and related trades. Applications at the Civilian Personnel Office. Wages range from 1.09 to 3.10 dollars per hour or year for GS-5. Male applicants only for some aircraft training devices roles.
Abilene May 11 Lewis D Pink 70 died after being buried by five tons of cottonseed in a bin at Western Cotton Oil Company plant. He was alive when coworkers found him about 30 minutes later but died at the scene.

The House Ways and Means Committee tentatively approved a 250 million dollar increase in federal taxes on liquor, beer and wine. Whiskey would rise from $9 to $10.50 per hundred proof gallon, beer from $8 to $9 a barrel, and wine taxes vary from 2 to 25 cents per gallon depending on alcohol content. Champagne sparking wines would go from 15 to 17 cents per half pint. The boosts are below the administration’s request.
The Associated Press notes early rains along the Texas Mexico border and in South Texas. The Texas Mexican Railway reports two washouts east of Laredo, delaying trains from Corpus Christi, Bruii, and Miranda City. Rain totals include 3 inches in the area and about 4 inches at Hebronville, with Laredo reaching 1.57 inches—the heaviest in months.
A hitchhiker robbed the Collinsville State Bank 15 miles southwest of Sherman at 8 am, taking 4009 dollars at gunpoint. Earl Franklin Morris, 29, of Kaw Oklahoma, surrendered after a brief pursuit, claiming he was broke and needed money. He resisted with two shots but offered no further resistance when arrested.
