Builder of Panhandle Cattle Empire Dies

Terry Thompson, a leading Panhandle cattleman born December 27, 1879 in Ellis County, died at 6 a.m. at his Amarillo home aged 68. He helped build a major Moore County cattle empire after moving to Amarillo as a boy, later expanding to a large ranching operation with up to 100000 mother cows and enduring the 1918 blizzards before rebuilding. He married Georgia Sneed in 1908 and lived at 1200 Tyler for over two decades.

Railroads Remain Running Under Army Oversight as Strike Threat Eases

Railroads kept rolling under Army supervision while President Truman pressed unions to accept a settlement. Army control is largely symbolic with private carriers operating. a federal court no strike order ended the dawn walkout. About 150,000 rail workers remained at their posts as experts warned it would take days to clear food backlogs and embargoes.

Rail Lines Resume Normal Service After Short-Notice Strike Cancelled

Regular operations resumed on Amarillo area lines as strike threats ended. Santa Fe Fort Worth and Denver and Rock Island lines report normal schedules this morning after embargo on perishables and livestock was lifted. Colonel J D Farrington of Chicago will serve as administrator for lines in the Southwest following recent officer appointments.

Lions Elect Rutherford District Governor at Des Moines Meet

The Panhandle rainfall report shows Hereford Adrian and Vega as the heaviest contributors with 80, 45 and 41 inches respectively. The Lions International convention in Des Moines announced Bill Rutherford of Dumas as district governor and honored N. W. Durham with the Key of Nations award for 100 new members. Temperatures cooled with rain totals easing drought, water flooding near Hillsboro and Itasca, and rainfall boosting Lake Travis prospects.

Pardonee Jailed After Dallas Slaying Amid Pardons Row

Marshall F. Morris jailed in Palestine after his friend A. W. Smalley was shot to death in a Dallas County tavern. Morris, once pardoned for slapping nurse Miss Jimmie Gantt, says the pistol discharge was accidental while Smalley reportedly borrowed the gun for protection. The pardon controversy followed his conviction and state high court ruling upholding it.

Grand Jury Ponders Ochiltree Slayings

Ochiltree County grand jurors consider two counts charging Derby A Cronister with murder. Sheriff Bill Lance says deliberations may not finish today. Cronister, 40, of Ochiltree County, has been free on bond since last Thursday. He is accused in the killings of C. W. Barker, 83, and his son W. H Barker, 26, on a country road about 26 miles southeast of Perryton last Thursday around 11 30 a.m.
