George E. Sokolski observes a naval officer in a theater box during the Star Spangled Banner. The officer, in uniform and not at attention, reflects a broader slipperiness of mind he sees in contemporary figures including New York politicians.
The article notes veterans in military uniforms joined a May Day Communist parade despite it being illegal to wear uniforms at such demonstrations. Authorities agree the act is illegal but will not act. It criticizes political cowardice and public spending by Chester Bowles and questions Congress's role in creating and abolishing bureaus and setting policy.

The Rev E B Fincher, pastor of Ellwood Park Presbyterian Church since its 1923 founding, preaches his retirement sermon. He will remain in Amarillo as a minister. Rev J Donald Norton will take over as incoming pastor. A Sunday meeting will name Fincher pastor emeritus. A 7 30 pm Monday devo and social hour honor Fincher and his wife. He is 76 and began ministry at Austin College in Sherman and served in Commerce McKinney Mescalero NM before arriving in Amarillo.
At Stone Mountain Georgia a mass Ku Klux Klan rally lit four burlap wrapped crosses and a 300 foot high cross on the mountainside drawing 2,000 spectators. More than 500 new members joined during the Pearl Harbor era event with 700 hooded figures present. Two UP reporters and a cameraman were roughed during cross burning as Samuel Green leads the organization and predicts further burnings nationwide.
Three hours before a White House conference with President Truman United Mine Workers leader John L. Lewis urged a 12 day truce and back to work by 400000 miners. He pledged essential production for health and security while talks continued and warned against contracts lacking essential protections. A White House proposal reportedly planned an 18 cent hourly wage rise and a health welfare fund with no coal royalty payments.
Mary Jeanne Larey of Frederick Oklahoma says she was the first victim of Texarkana’s phantom who has killed five others and wounded six. She recounted a masked assailant forcing her companion to strip and beating both, with a brutal assault that she says may be connected to the nearby string of murders. Officers have not publicly linked her attack to the others, though the case remains unresolved.
Delegates from seven states and 25 cities met at the Amarillo Hotel to designate United States Highway 60 from Santa Monica to Cairo as the Free Way of America. Walter V. Pittman of Riverside, California, is president. officers to be elected tomorrow. Virgil Patterson welcomed visitors at the opening session. A banquet was scheduled for 6 PM at convention headquarters.
Following county discussion the Northwest Texas Hospital board formed an investigating committee to study a 600000 bond for a 100 bed addition. Members are Dr Jason Robberson Charles Crowe and Harry Hatch with architect Guy Carlander to be consulted. The panel will report at a second joint meeting on June 6.
Saturday noon marks the last chance to obtain season tickets for the Amarillo Philharmonic Orchestra’s 1946-47 season. After this, only single concert admissions remain at prices near the season rate. Loge $9, parquet $7.20, balcony $6 and $4.50 including tax. Amarillo High School seniors celebrated National Kid Day by dressing as 12 to 15 year olds and performing school activities. Awards honored typical first grade students Arlen McNeil and Dorothy Thompson, prettiest girl Carolyn Clark, cutest couple Bert Stephens and Gene Schulze, with prizes of all day suckers. A noon picnic at Ellwood Park concluded the event despite poor weather.
The House of Lords decreed the historical document should be Magna Carta, removing the long-accepted "H" added by a 15th century copyist. Lord Jowitt explained the scribe error and confirmed the 1215 spelling as written at Runnymede.
An explosion wrecked the Plaza Hotel in Tyler injuring several. Two victims died today Virginia Dennis about 20 a cashier and F D Perron of Sherman a telephone line crewman.
The Louisiana supreme court considers an application to free Willie Francis an 18 year old condemned African American murderer who survived an electrocution attempt and holds a short stay of execution granted by Acting Governor E Emile Verret while the court studies the portable electric chair failure and legal implications.
Paris May 1 Foreign Secretary Bevin accuses Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov of Blocking a peace conference by demanding Big Four consent on all terms before submission Bevin says the move acts as a veto leaving talks deadlocked and ministers plan an informal session to seek a way forward Also noted is an advertisement for John Maynard Lumber Co.
Ramon Cadena hid $12000 on a farm 20 miles north of El Paso for 13 years and went to town to finalize a farm deal. He lost his purse and today offers a $1000 reward for the return of the money.
Hollywood May 10 Edgar Bergen and Frances Weston welcomed a blonde daughter weighing seven pounds 13 ounces at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. Both mother and child are reported in good health with well wishers sending gifts and cards.

Dr. Clifford R. Adams, director of the Penn State marriage counseling service, told about 300 women in Boston that New England has more spinsters per capita than any other U S region. He said New England girls are too intelligent for marriage because many men want wives with an IQ lower than their own.
On the eve of his retirement E Frank King the longtime Texas educator will be honored at a banquet by the Principals and Supervisors Club at Wilson School. Felix Phillips will speak praising King who ends 53 years in Texas public education and retires May 28. King 75 has guided rural and school leadership from sun up to sun down and taught at San Jacinto School after serving at Fannin County’s large rural school.
