Washington May 9 The Senate reaffirmed adoption of Democratic surtax rates on the eve of final tax bill action. Five Republicans and Senators Johnson Shipstead Farmer-Labor Minnesota joined Democrats in opposing the 2 percent rate while Bayard of Delaware and Bruce of Maryland backed the Republicans. A proposal for a 32 percent maximum failed 47 to 86 and a 37 percent maximum was defeated 46 to 39 as GOP members pressed for 87 percent house rates.
Speaker Frederick H. Gillett of the house announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for U S Senate from Massachusetts. He made the decision after talks with Massachusetts leaders and prepared a formal statement after visiting the White House. He aims to unseat Senator Walsh, the Democrat.
On the way to Bosque county to speak at a Meridian Clifton celebration Governor Pat M. Neff stopped briefly in Waco. He declined to discuss politics and planned to address the crowd this afternoon.

Edward L. Doheny Jr was ordered by Justice Hitz in the District of Columbia supreme court to appear on May 16 to show cause why he should not be compelled to testify before the special grand jury. He had declined to testify last Tuesday citing potential self incrimination. The grand jury reported the matter to the court with a request for the order.
Springfield Mass May 9 The Methodist Episcopal general conference approved the ordination of women as local pastors in the Methodist ministry by a decisive majority The admission of women to itinerancy and to membership in annual conferences was almost unanimously defeated
Fourteen people were buried yesterday by a massive landslide in Misantla near Jalapa. Residents fled the area fearing further slides as aftershocks and continued rain raise concerns of additional danger.
Mrs. Marie Rogers wife of Fred Rogers was arrested with her husband in Hemphill county jail Canadian after a box of bonded evidence and papers containing $1800 worth of clothing theft from Canadian and Fargo was set on fire by Rogers to destroy evidence. Police chief Clark Cain said the jail building was saved and that the Rogers duo linked to Charlie Chambers and Frank Morris faced theft charges from Canadian Amarillo and Fargo crimes.
Tri State Exposition budgeting committee and directors meet at 8 o clock tonight announced by secretary O V Vernon. Paul C Jones appointed assistant to Vernon for exposition work and will attend the meeting. Vernon urged payments on fair bonds due to ongoing construction at the fair grounds including a race track and tree planting. Bonds remain on sale and can be purchased by contacting Mr Vernon at the Board of City Development.
Former Representative R. L. Henry testified at a senate contest hearing that Klan officials aided the 1922 Texas U S Senate race for Democrat Mayfield. He said on May 21 at Paris Texas he was called to a Klan leaders conference with Dr H W Evans imperial wizard and others to clear the field for Mayfield.

The resolution will be sent to the general federation of Women’s Clubs in Los Angeles for endorsement.
Health officials in Amarillo launch a Fly War urging residents to destroy breeding places by clearing weeds, burning trash, and storing waste. They advise screening houses, using cans, and avoiding purchase of foods near fly-infested areas to curb typhoid, dysentery, and tuberculosis risks.

Most single rooms will include private baths and rent 10 to 15 dollars weekly. Each floor will feature a laundry and tea kitchen for members.
In Amite Louisiana six Italians were hanged for the Dallas Calmes murder. The final pair died at 1 16 p m after two earlier hangings. Roy Leona and Natale Deamore were among those executed. Lamantia Bocc hio Giglio Rint also faced the trap. In Kentucky three men Frank Thomas George Weick and Charles Miller were electrocuted in the Western State Penitentiary, Miller identified as a Negro, with executions completing in the early hours.

Six members of Wil Miller family, an orchardist, drowned in flood waters of a mountain stream ten miles from Martinsburg West Virginia late yesterday. Reports received today confirm the tragedy and identify Miller as the family’s head.
