Two 10 year old boys confessed to starting a Swift and Company warehouse blaze on April 25 in Houston. Investigators say the motive was revenge against a man who chased them off the Swift property days earlier. The fire caused more than $180,000 in damages.
LONDON May 8 H Gordon Selfridge Wisconsin born founder of a London merchandising fortune died today at his home He was 83 years old Selfridge introduced many American methods to London He started at 15 with the firm that became Marshall Field's and at 39 had a fortune to retire in 1903 He later established Selfridges on Oxford Street in 1909 earning the title the Marshall Field of England His death followed a short illness of bronchial pneumonia at his Putney home in southwest London.
Lord Inverchapel, British ambassador, said he hopes to visit Texas in October. He spoke at a luncheon honoring him by the Texas congressional delegation and plans to visit Texas colleges to talk with students.
Oklahoma City May 8 A gun toting Rep Jimmie Scott was granted 5000 bond after wounding State Sen Tom Anglin in a dramatic shootout in the Oklahoma Senate chamber Scott a Holdenville freshman and 34 spent the night in jail and agreed to return to jail pending a habeas corpus hearing Anglin 64 was said to be resting well in University Hospital Investigators prepared to file assault with intent to kill and Scott was described as a dangerous man by the county attorney while Scott offered to cooperate with authorities
General MacArthur issued a statement denying that the United States would undertake future defense of Japan. He said Allies would protect Japan only until a peace treaty is signed, in response to reports after his meeting with Emperor Hirohito.
