Texarkana residents live in fear as authorities pursue a killer dubbed The Phantom. Five victims shot in head, couples targeted in double slayings, clues include footprints and a flashlight, with speculation of a sex maniac. Local officials urge caution while patrolling cross-state.
United Press reports a coal strike threatens major auto production with Ford planning near full shutdown and Chrysler possible curtailment next week while GM sees no immediate shutdown. Rail unions prep a May 18 strike with a total traffic stoppage feared. meanwhile a deadly Texarkana murder spree spurs multiple investigations and a decaying railroad mystery.
Amarillo businessmen led by Ted Taylor and Mayor Joe A Jenkins raised well over $30,000 after sellout Paramount Theater tickets at 10 each. A second breakfast secured additional pledges to expand the drive to the State Theater, with Interstate Theaters offering to match funds if $6,000 more could be raised.
The Paramount and State theaters in Amarillo screen MGM's Boys Ranch filmed at Old Tascosa. Proceeds may total around 50 000 dollars for project directors as 1200 school children attend the State show. The other ministers reportedly may accept a deputy drafted list of agreed and disputed points, showing US and Britain opposing Russia on major points. The ministers plan to review expert reports at their next session and then break up.
Salt Lake City reports a traffic incident with a driver who veered across the street and stopped near a parked car. Officer J H Simonsen noted the near collision and the driver handed him the steering wheel saying here it is.
Leland F. Kirk 72 a pioneer Amarillo resident and stockholder of White and Kirk died this morning at Scott and White Clinic Temple after an operation. He had lived in the area over 30 years and is survived by his wife Virginia Kirk of Houston a sister Miss Ruby Kirk two nephews and several nieces. Funeral arrangements await arrival of relatives from Temple and Amarillo.
Four armed bandits robbed the Summersville State Bank of 5400 wounding the bank president and shooting up the town. They cut phone lines, rounded up 15 townspeople, and fled in a mud spattered 1941 Chevrolet, pursued by officers as they vanished into Missouri hills with no clues to their identities.
