President Roosevelt signaled a veto message on the Patman bonus bill would go to Congress shortly. Speaker Burns had predicted the House would override a veto, while the Senate would sustain the President. The bill proposes paying the bonus with issuing 2,000,000,000 dollars in bonds.
Hawaii and Midway Island will host a vast mass flight as 42 planes and about 200 personnel take off at 6 A M for a 1200 mile hop to Midway to join exercises. Admiral Reeves ordered the routine operation amid strict secrecy with Pearl Harbor officials withholding confirmations. Commander Tod leads the journey, described as the greatest test yet for planes at Pearl Harbor.
Hanson Post No. BM of the American Legion announces it will support the Patman bill after internal debate. Commander George E. Macon Missouri May 8 Louis Duvall county prosecutor joined coroner’s inquiry into a TWA luxury liner crash with the jury focusing on the radio which operated poorly the night of the accident. Death toll stood at five with two injured in critical condition.
A three day postponement of the murder trial of Sheriff W F Cato of Garza County and others indicted in the machine gun slaying of Federal Narcotic Agent Spencer Stafford was announced. The trial had been set for May 20 before Federal Judge James C Wilson at Lubbock. Sheriff Cato was acquitted yesterday in federal court of a conspiracy charge related to the grand jury investigation.
Washington May 8 The House approved provisions of the Omnibus Banking Bill to make permanent the temporary deposit insurance plan. Only one amendment was proposed to title one of the bill which makes permanent the present insurance of bank deposits up to 5000 dollars.
Kilagure May 8 United Press report says William Curless 35 truck foreman for Shell Oil was missing for days. He was located last night in a Longview cafe appearing to suffer amnesia.
President Roosevelt opened his push to end unemployment by earmarking 2.011 billion dollars for infrastructure and public works. Funds will support eight work types including highways rural housing and soil erosion control with 2 billion held in reserve if pace slows toward the July 1 1936 deadline.
Havana May 8 Army officials announce Antonio Guiteras American born former secretary of interior and radical leader was slain in battle with soldiers at Matanzas. One of his companions died and two soldiers were killed, Major Ramon Valls told the Associated Press. Matanzas lies about 65 miles east of Havana on Cuba's north coast.
The Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the death sentences of W. D. May in Tarrant County and C. B. James in Tyler County on May 8. The rulings uphold the judges’ punishments following murder convictions.
Forecast shows fair and cooler conditions tonight and Thursday for Amarillo and West Texas. Panhandle unsettled and somewhat cooler, New Mexico mostly fair with cooler temperatures in extreme northeast tonight. Temperature extremes reach 57 to 75.
Sylvester P. Darden, 38, a World War veteran, was acquitted of murder in the shotgun death of his wife. He testified the shooting was caused by his 8-year-old son Jackie Glenn while the child was sleep-walking. The verdict followed a previously report of a deadlocked jury and a court-ordered continuation.
Funeral services for Billy Thompson 24 son of Mrs L O Thompson will be held tomorrow at 2 PM from First Baptist Church where the Thompsons were members. Mrs Thompson wounded in the crash is expected to travel from Midland to Amarillo by train tonight to attend.
An Orange Texas youth William W Cole traveled to Amarillo to enlist for Fort Francis E Warren Wyoming. He was accepted for infantry service this morning and plans to see snow on mountain tops the Cheyenne rodeo and trout streams, if he can dodge kitchen police details.

Amelia Earhart started from Mexico City at 6:00 AM aboard a fully fueled 3000 pound red monoplane for a 2100 mile non stop trek to New York. She carried 472 gallons of gasoline and 20 gallons of oil with a 14 to 16 hour expected duration and radio contact reported OK at 12:30 PM New Orleans time.
