Shorthand review classes start tomorrow at 4 pm in the Emergency Education class of Mrs. Myrtle J. Cooper, Room 111 Potter County Courthouse. The free instruction requires students be at least sixteen, unemployed, and unable to pay elsewhere. Only those with no prior shorthand experience may enroll if they are W P A employment certified family members. Apply to the classroom or Room 442 Amarillo Building, district office, with enrollment closing Monday May 9.
Deputy Whitaker serves as day jailer while regular officer Dick Vaughn is out of town. Vaughn and Deputy Milt Cunningham traveled to Austin Monday to accompany two mental detectives to a state institution.

Wilson Oliver a 12 year old fifth grader at Franklin School in Oklahoma City killed himself with a shotgun after being whipped by teacher Wilbur Wilcox for playing hockey. Acting Coroner Evert Crismore described the method and noted powder burns on the boy’s left hand. Olen Oliver said his son had been playing hockey for a month. The incident followed the teacher’s use of a rubber hose in discipline.
President Roosevelt leads a three boat fishing fleet 150 miles south along the Texas Gulf coast. He sails aboard the Potomac from Port Aransas at 6 57 A M for Port Isabel, the Rio Grande mouth, after already catching one silver king tarpon.
Fort Worth chief deputy Grover Leige will act as U.S. Marshal in Amarillo for a few days replacing W. F. Lampe who has been ill with the flu for a week.
Judge James C. Wilson will open the Federal Court on Monday May 17 and tentatively set Tuesday as naturalization day for the district. About 15 applicants have filed for naturalization papers.
In Newark on May 4, attorneys for Ellis H. Parker and his son argued an old perjury conviction of Paul H. Wendel could block him from testifying in the Lindbergh kidnapping conspiracy trial. Judge William Clark ruled a full pardon removed disqualification and Wendel testified.
United Press reports for Field glasses observed by the correspondent as the Duke of Windsor arrived. Bedaux photographed the scene with a home movie camera while servants staged baggage handling and the party moved inside shortly after. Lawyers for the Duke of Windsor are mentioned.

Directors of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce will meet tomorrow noon in parlor A of the Amarillo Hotel. Notices were mailed from headquarters. Only routine business is planned, said manager Carl Hinton. This will be the first regular meeting of the newly elected directors after the retirement of the previous board.
Chicago experts forecast 1937 winter wheat harvest at about 652 million bushels, nearly matching prior estimates and ahead of 1936’s 519 million. Spring wheat area is seen at 22.6 million acres, compared with 20.9 million in government estimates, despite drought and last month’s crop deterioration.
Directors of the Panhandle Water Conservation Association are called to meet at 2:30 PM Thursday in the Amarillo Hotel. The weather bureau records show only one rain event in April in Amarillo. On April 19 into the next morning rain fell, while the rest of the month yielded 0.39 inches of precipitation from snow and wind. Wind averaged 11.1 mph over 30 days, and temperatures ran about two degrees above normal.

Cur ry Quay and Roosevelt counties in New Mexico could join the district by local vote. The bill aims to conserve waters of the Red Brazos and Canadian Rivers and would appoint a board with one director per county and hire a general manager. A $3000 appropriation is included.
