Divorce and suicide amid modern marriage debates in 1930s
A woman plans a final meeting with her husband’s lawyer to discuss divorce and kills herself before the appointment. Her farewell to her father cites love lost and requests her wedding ring in the coffin. The article uses her tragedy to critique Bertrand Russell’s ideas on nonmonogamous relationships and contrasts it with contemporary social theories. It notes President Roosevelt’s wartime pay policies, a sweeping public works plan, and calls for monetary funding over borrowing. The piece critiques congressional attitudes and discusses national defense compensation.

Reading Speed Versus Thought Shapes Travel and Literature
A new Trinity College machine promises instant reading of a single number in three two-thousandths of a second. If the optic nerve and brain could process data that fast, a minute would yield 40,000 words and all world literature would rush by. Yet the author argues speed matters less than how much you think while you travel or read.
