J D Morton explains why an $8 traffic fine wasn’t paid. he gave the money to his wife who used it as a down payment toward a divorce. Judge Oliver Youngs allows Morton to pay another $8 without penalty. Building activity sets a 21 year high with $1.341 million in permits in Amarillo.
Amarillo residents live atop a network of underground uplifts in the Texas Panhandle. Geologists describe the ancient Amarillo Mountains formed by sea incursions and long geological ages, with peaks dipping beneath the plains and roots reaching ancient rock cores. The feature stretches across Potter and Oldham counties, extending toward the Wichita and Arbuckle ranges near Lawton.
Senator Morse pressed Philip Randolph on potential civil disobedience by millions of Negroes if Army policies remain segregated. Randolph warned that if changes do not come, many will refuse service, risking treason charges and nationwide protest to secure democratic rights.

In Washington March 31 a 300 bed addition to the veterans hospital in Amarillo was endorsed by a Veterans Administration official. Omar Clark executive aide to Maj. Gen. Carl R. Gray said the recommendation is now with Gray. Rep Worley plans to introduce a bill to authorize a 3 million dollar appropriation for the addition.
Final zone reports show Potte County Red Cross Chapter about 19000 below its 5000 quota though approximately 26000 cash has been collected. Davis, chapter manager, said reports from all zones not yet in and more contributions are expected to lift totals toward the goal.
Senator Lodge of Massachusetts urged immediate voluntary enlistment of 50 000 young Europeans into the United States Army. He argued this would reduce draft needs and help start universal military training as part of wartime preparedness.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals upholds Paul Rowland Jones three year sentence for attempted bribery of Dallas County Sheriff Steve Guthrie. The court overruled Jones motion for rehearing from its January decision.

Communists and left wing Socialists urged Italy’s government to stop a flood of U S letters urging Italians to vote against the Communists in the April 18 election. The letters, written by Americans to relatives in Italy, were deemed foreign interference in the pre election campaign.
