Washington March 29 Friends of Governor Thomas E. Dewey and Senator Robert A. Taft reportedly agreed to prevent a long deadlock at the Republican nominating convention. A third man acceptable to both may be chosen quickly to block a rank outsider, with Arthur Vandenberg or Joseph Martin as likely options. Export Control Plan Backed By House Panel
The House Foreign Affairs Committee overwhelmingly backed an amendment to a $6.25 billion foreign aid bill to give the foreign administrator power to veto exports to Russia and satellites when deemed in the national interest. Mundt of South Dakota said approval comes as the bill nears a House floor vote, possibly tomorrow, with passage expected by Wednesday at the latest. Senate action meanwhile approved a $335 million emergency aid package for France, Italy and Austria to sustain supplies until Europe’s recovery program begins. Rep. Engel, Michigan, urged military readiness as essential to deter threats and restore prewar power, noting $4,215,000,000 for Greece and China aid and a $5.3 billion European recovery program. He spoke of using economic and military power to secure lasting peace.
