Amarillo’s 1887 settlement and early town plans
Historical sketches recount Amarillo’s settlement in spring 1887 near Amarillo Creek with three projected sites by Jenkins, Plemons, and Berry. The Fort Worth & Denver City Railroad shaped the eventual town site southeast of the creek, and Berry’s location near Wild Horse Lake became the county seat after an August 1887 vote.
