Cohen says he is too broke to testify in Texas hearing

West Coast gambler Mickey Cohen told Austin reporters he cannot afford to travel 1,200 miles to appear before a state crime investigating committee but would testify if expenses were advanced. He said he could answer questions by phone. House leaders expect him to appear Tuesday, and subpoenas have been issued for other Texans tied to his case.

Dusty dawn over Panhandle sparks soil erosion alerts

The northern brownish horizon signaled dust from Western Kansas moving into the Texas Panhandle. Weatherman Walter Watts reported light dust but northerly winds up to 35 mph with gusts to 45. Potter County ag agent Art Bralley warned emergency tillage may be needed as dry, wind-exposed fields suffer erosion, especially wheat.

The Air Force reports a large transport plane with 53 aboard is missing on a flight from the United States to England over the Atlantic. Among the passengers identified is Brig. Gen. Paul T. Cullen, deputy commander at Barksdale Field, Shreveport Louisiana, en route to an undisclosed European destination.

Surrender ends hiding for two Amarillo men in Hawaii tale

Two Amarillo men, David Lawrence Davis and Lawrence Theodore Allen, aged 20 and 21, surrendered at the postal inspector's office in Amarillo after a nationwide search. They are charged in federal cases of burglarizing post office substations and face Potter County indictments. They had been described as part of a burglary and hijacking ring, aided by reports of a missing C-124 transport over the Atlantic.
