Italian troops and police defeated a Communist insurrection in San Severo, Puglia, after a six hour street battle. One policeman and two children were killed, at least 15 people wounded, about 10,000 Communists involved. Army regained control by 2 p.m. curfew imposed, town sealed off as sporadic gunfire continued.
Lloyd Kennedy, 41, Black, of 312 West road, says a light-skinned Romani woman claimed to cure his eye trouble without surgery. He withdrew 800 dollars, gave it in a rolled rag next to his body, then found only two dollars and paper when she did not return. He planned eye surgery and his wife attends school in Austin.
Floodwaters in New South Wales Southeast Australia forced the evacuation of about 2000 people from homes. Authorities warned residents to seek higher ground as rivers rose and rainfall continued.
The FBI joined a Dallas case accusing a Chicago based crime ring of a $40,000 jewel theft linked to a February heist. Ex convicts William Jarrette and Lester Bennett claim a Chicago Italian contact organized Dallas work with pawnbroker Tommy Swartz involved. Police and prosecutors clash over charges as the case unfolds and federal authorities review interstate jewel movements.
Minnie Lambert 61, dying of cancer and heart trouble, had her life sentence commuted by Gov. Williams but remains in a Detroit hospital ward. Convicted 1932 for plotting her husband Darius Lambert’s murder to marry his brother Albert, Albert died in prison. Minnie has 10 children and 30 grandchildren. The family wishes she spend her last hours in northern Michigan, while officials say she will stay hospitalized until papers come through.
Dense smoke filled the basement of the T. H. Williams Department Store in downtown Austin as firemen fought to reach several men trapped below. Reports vary on the number inside, with two to four feared trapped. six firefighters were overcome by smoke as crews opened traps and sprayed water into the murky interior. Fire Chief John Woody expressed little hope for rescuing those below while civilians fled the two story building at Fifth Street and Avenue.
Amarillo High School Bel Canto Chorale small fundraiser plans a downtown tag day to raise 308.20 toward transportation and hotel costs for a March trip to Houston. The 75 member group will perform at Huntsville and Abilene, tour Galveston, Austin, and the state Capitol, and transcribe with the Houston Symphony for a KGNC broadcast.

Victor C. Johnson of Amarillo, former Moore County treasurer, was freed on 5000 dollar bond after indictments alleging embezzlement of Moore County funds. Audits show shortages totaling 10516 dollars between January 1 and June 16, 1949. Johnson, a World War II veteran who lost a leg in Saipan, is married with two children.
A B-56 four engine bomber from Davis Monthan Air Force base carrying 14 crew members exploded and crashed eleven miles north of Hyder Arizona. Witnesses reported seeing parachutes. No fee information was received by the base public information office.
La Salle, 56, jailed after Sally, now nearly 13, testified he held her in Camden for 21 months, threatening exposure of a schoolgirl prank and pressuring sexual advances. He denies the accusations, says Sally’s mother is his wife, and claims Sally’s father died. Prosecutors file Mann Act transport and abduction charges, potential seven year penalty.
