Wartime draws thousands of young women to federal jobs in Washington
The defense program has added over 25 900 women in the last year, with 100 joining daily. Most ages 20 to 30 come from small Midwest and Southern towns as typists clerks and stenographers earning 1200 to 1440 yearly. They live in crowded rooms cost about 40 a month for meals and rent, and some share flats for around 50. Night classes bloom as women pursue government careers amid a lopsided 10 to 1 female to male ratio. Florence Paul from Quincy Illinois is among those arriving to work in Civil Service roles.
