Roads Group Opposes Texas Road Bond Plan

The Texas Good Roads Association urged strong opposition to a road bond assumption bill in the Texas legislature. They argued it would pledge state gasoline tax revenue to county bonds and warrants for local roads, inflate bond values, profit bond promoters, and divert transportation taxes from state highway needs.

Two Men Killed in Auto Truck Crash Near Houston

Two unidentified men died in a crash on the Beaumont highway five miles east of Houston. The light coupe collided with a heavy oil truck at 8 A.M. after attempting to pass another vehicle in fog. Jack P. Summers, 32, driver of the truck, reported the coupe veered from its lane.

Frank Blackwell Dies. Rites Held In Amarillo

Funeral services for 46 year old Amarillo cook Frank Blackwell were held at Boxwell Brothers Chapel with Rev. E. B. Fincher officiating. Burial followed in Dalhart cemetery after overland transport. Blackwell, a World War II veteran, had lived in Amarillo 22 years.

City hall issued three permits adding a total cost of 11 300. J. C. King receives a five room stucco house at 700 Houston Street costing 3 000. W. E. Conway gets a five room frame at 1917 Washington for 3 800. Clifford McMurtry secures a five room frame at 3005 Polk Street for 4 500.

Cronmiller Rites This Afternoon

Funeral rites for Loretta Ruth Cronmiller 48 of Amarillo were held at Polk Street Methodist Church with Rev. C C Grimes officiating. Texas Highway Patrol Transfers Sgt Kelley to Amarillo

Sgt. R. H. Kelley of the Texas Highway Patrol is transferred from Corpus Christi to the Amarillo district to replace Sgt. R. M. Hammett who moves to Corpus Christi. Kelley is a veteran officer with previous service in Austin San Antonio Uvalde and Corpus Christi. Hammett’s wife plans to join him soon.

Pardons Board Bill Favored in Texas

In Austin, March 21, the pardons and paroles board gained support for enabling legislation to formalize the board under a constitutional amendment. The Senate penitentiaries committee reported the Burns bill with an amendment allowing Huntsville residence for one member and two in Austin. Burns urged improved pardon laws, noting potential annual savings around $600,000 if parole timing is tightened.

Watchman Is Shot Down Near Death in Houston

J F Coleman a 30 year old night watchman was shot by a gunman while on patrol near a shaded street. He confronted a man seated in a car then was struck and a bullet fired into his chest. Police said nearby home of oil man W S Farish was ransacked with a pistol 500 in jewelry and 75 in cash taken.

Wood Wind Quintet To Be Heard at Sandie Concert

Amarilloans and others will attend next Thursday’s free public concert in Municipal Auditorium by the Golden Sandie band. The first wood wind quintet organized in North Texas will perform Castillia Bolero by G E Holmes. Members include Virginia Todd flutes Earl Christian clarinet oboe Catherine Burleson French horn Roy Reed bassoon Patricia Harris. The 87 piece organization is praised by Prof. Oscar Wise. The program begins at 8 pm with open doors and no charge. This is the second concert of the season and the last before the high school band goes to Plainview for state competition.

Illinois Couple Held After Man Killed in Truck Blast

A dynamite blast killed Earl Austin in Cave In Rock Illinois. His estranged wife Alice Austin and neighbor Theodore Simmons were charged jointly with murder and held in Saline County jail. Miss Lucille McDowell, 19, was hospitalized after the blast that destroyed the truck. Investigators seek motive as divorce proceedings between Austin and Mrs. Austin unfold.

Funeral services for Allen H Willborn 68 year old Amarillo industrialist and Willborn Brothers Company president were held at First Baptist Church. He died last night at 11 30 after a paralytic attack at his home 2600 Hayden Street. He lived in Amarillo almost 30 years and was a Panhandle resident since 1889. Survivors include his wife a son H O Willborn two daughters Mrs Joe Mobley of Amarillo and Mrs W W Cox of Stonewall Colo four grandchildren and two brothers.
