United Press reports North Dakota and Georgia ignite the 1924 presidential race. Coolidge fares poorly in hostile territory in North Dakota while LaFollette’s influence slows Johnson. Georgia shows McAdoo defeating Underwood amid oil scandal questions.
Fargo March 20 President Coolidge carries the North Dakota presidential primary by a plurality of 15000 with official returns from most precincts and速報 unofficial tallies. A late surge put Sen Lafollette ahead of Sen Johnson by a small margin, surprising Johnson supporters who expected Lafollette’s sticker campaign to fail.
William G McAdoo swept Georgia to win 117 counties with Oscar Underwood carrying 32 counties in the same primary vote results announced today in Atlanta Georgia McAdoo leads in the state returning strong support for his presidential bid as Underwood contests only a fraction of the counties.
William C. Gates, connected to Louisville’s mutilation murder, is charged in Houston with assault with a prohibited weapon against W. W. Anderson. An earlier indictment by a grand jury followed kidnapping and assault charges against Gates and Richard Heaton, who was killed in Louisville days ago after Gates said Heaton held him captive for two days to perform an operation for a supposed wrong.
The house elections committee today seated R. J Lee Moore of the first Georgia district and dismissed challenges against him. It also ruled that F E W Cole elected from Texas at large on the basis of the 1920 census was not entitled to his seat.
Fire today razed the old World's Fair flat building in Chicago causing about 250000 dollars in damage. Sixteen families were left homeless and two persons were overcome by smoke.
Tokyo reports that fourteen sailors are believed alive in a sunken Japanese submarine off Nagasaki. Salvage crews heard shouts from inside the vessel including Banzai Emperor cries, but no further word has come from the imprisoned men since.
Plans are underway for a new wing at St. Mary's Academy costing about $36,000. The 110 by 60 foot addition will include a chapel aduitorium and a community room plus other spaces. Construction starts not before late summer, increasing capacity to 220 students with six more teachers.
Houston March 20 Herbert Kokernot was elected by acclamation as president of the Texas Cattlemen's Association at the forty eighth annual convention in Houston. Officers named include R M Kelberg vice president C C Slaughter treasurer and KE B Miller secretary, with Fort Worth and San Antonio vying to host the 1925 convention. An athletic program in the city auditorium capped the event, praised as the greatest ever.
Georges Carpentier and Tommy Gibbons have been matched to fight in Michigan City Indiana on July 4 promoter Floyd Fitzsimmons announced. Governor McCray reportedly withdrew objections to the bout and Gibbons' manager said a signing would follow once a venue is secured.

By a unanimous vote the senate adopted a Walsh resolution directing Secretary Weeks to provide all information on arms and supplies to Mexico. Senator Walsh of Montana chairs the oil committee and led the measure.

Mrs Gertrude M Clements, a local osteopathy practitioner, said she received a phone plea to come to Kansas City and write to her. Dr O M McMurtry confirmed the sister’s grief and said she would travel to Kansas City.
London March 20 Winston Churchill former liberal and cabinet member was defeated in a Westminster bye election by Conservative Otho Nicholson. Churchill ran independently after breaking with his party over labor and Asquith. The result was announced today.
Nine persons were trapped by fire in an apartment on Troost avenue and saved by firefighters. The flames blocked the stair exit, forcing the tenants to be carried down ladders by the rescuers.
