City Still Pays Civil War Ransom and Bonds
Frederick Maryland residents face three years more of war debt payments linked to Civil War bonds issued 1864. Authorities estimate remaining debt at 40 000 to 60 000 dollars with about 300 000 dollars in interest already paid, while 1951 will mark the end of the Civil War debt. The city sought federal help but continued annual bond payments to banks that financed the 1864 defense.
