Exemption Debate Sparks Punishment Sentiment in Amarillo
Amarillo High School hosted state Superintendent M. N. Marrs who argued exemptions foster a punitive view of exams. He praised Amarillo students for low failure rates at state universities, crediting disciplined exam routines. Marrs recalled a National Education Association luncheon in Boston with other state superintendents and shared a Mary Mary lamb tablet anecdote. He urged students to define goals, distinguishing jawbone wishbone and backbone classes, concluding Amarillo’s top students belong to the backbone group.
