Firemen responded to an alarm at 10 18 this morning and battled the blaze for about twenty five minutes at the wash house and residence located at 1516 East Ninth Avenue. The incident left significant smoke and heat damage but no further injuries reported.
A Backwoods Bard lauds a plain old rabbit dog over pedigree hounds as the best farm dog. The poem pictures the coon and rabbit chase, the dog’s versatility as watchdog and hunter, and the farmer boy’s bond with a loyal common mongrel.
Allied infantry struggled to clear Cassino amid ruins and uncertain ground. Lt. Maxwell Jonah and his party identified 24 mines on the road into town as shells and debris hid most structures. A lady's wrist watch was found and may be claimed with identification after 6 pm. A brown and black brindled dog with white feet and a white neck ring was found near 715 North Buchanan Street and may be claimed by calling 2 3667.
At Amarillo time the Dow Jones index stood at 140.91, up 0.20 with the day’s activity noting utilities and other stock movements. The report shows mixed figures across sectors with sales totals recorded at 145,085 for the current session.
More than 200 members and guests attended the Fathers Night program staged by St Marys Academy Parent-Teacher Association in Cathedral Hall. Eighth grade pupils and their parents were honored with a supper. Mrs Glenn Bowen Amarillo council president and Wes Izzard were featured speakers, with Bowen outlining local P T A activities and the Victory garden project earning national notice. Izzard spoke on world events. Charles W McKamy underwent emergency appendectomy at Northwest Texas Hospital and is reported doing nicely.
Cpl Elvin Earl Gruver of Amarillo is stationed in Iceland. His parents Mr and Mrs E E Gruver of 1212 East Thirteenth Avenue received a letter from their son describing his time in Iceland. He had worked for Amarillo Hardware Company before joining the Army two years ago.
Chicago hogs 19,500 head, prices 10-15 higher on all weights and sows. Cattle 4,500, steers and yearlings 10-15 higher, heifers steady, cows 10-15 lower. Sheep 3,500, lambs firm to 15 higher on red wooled western lambs. Colorado lambs 16.25-16.40, fall shorn 15.50. Kansas City hogs 3,000 head, 14.15-14.25 for 200-330 lb. cattle 1,000 head, 14.00-15.55 for steers and yearlings. calves 150, and sheep 2,000, slow with stronger bid for best fed lambs above 16.
Amarillo trio Larry Robert Garre Paul Peak Taylor and John Creedmore Wyatt Jr graduate from Baylor University College of Dentistry. Doctor Garre receives a commission as first lieutenant in the Army’s specialized training program and will enter service immediately.
