The 70th Infantry Division with U S Seventh Army advanced about four miles today into Germany and reached the Saar River just west of Saarbruecken as of March 14.
Allied air raids burned large areas of Osaka Nagoya and Tokyo and forced heightened air raid measures as B-29s hit Japan's wartime centers while Iwo Jima operations continued with Marines seizing key rocks and Japanese pockets in Mandalay Luzon and Mindanao battles.
In the West, Allied armies push on with cannons and patrols. German forces expect Rhine crossings by Americans and Canadians in the north. The U S First Army reports gains near the bridgehead and toward the Frankfurt superhighway as Third Army launches a fresh effort to outflank the Saar. Southern Saarland front patrols intensify.
The Weather Bureau reports Mostly cloudy conditions with little temperature change in Amarillo this afternoon. Tonight and Thursday bring partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures with fresh winds in the Del Rio Eagle Pass area. New Mexico shows clouds, scattered showers, possible thunderstorms this afternoon, then partly cloudy tomorrow with no major temperature change. Low tonight 30 to 35 north to 50 south. High Thursday 60 north to 75 south.
General showers covered the Panhandle with .31 inches falling here between 8 AM and noon. Cold air from the mountains delivered moisture overnight, reaching the area by mid morning. Weather Bureau reports rainfall about average and predicts partly cloudy cooler weather tonight and Thursday.
Mrs. Donald Spalding offered cigarettes to blood donors for her 3 year old son Donnie to combat nephrosis. Dozens of volunteers offered to help, many accepting nothing in return, and hospital staff struggled to track the high volume of donors. Donnie has received 40 transfusions in two years, with blood at $25 a pint a ongoing burden on the family.
Tokyo radio via FCC said 70 Philippines based American planes attacked Formosa again yesterday. The report noted most were B 24 bombers and that several targets were hit with damage described as very light.
The march 14 Reuters dispatch from Moscow reports Soviet forces piercing a main German line west of the Oder, with Zhukov’s First White Russian Army overrunning 18 miles of front between Kuestrin and threatening Frankfurt. Germany vows to defend Berlin to the last bullet as new German commanders are named and East Prussia battles intensify.
Ann Stringer reports at Remagen Bridgehead Germany on March 13 about the heavy antiaircraft defense guarding the Rhine bridges. American gunners from Pvt. Robert F.E. Neff onward describe intense flak, Thunderbolts and Lightnings patrolling the area and the high price of war as German planes attempt to reach the bridge.
Radio Moscow issued through Task News Agency a denial of reports that the Soviet Union and the Vatican were negotiating an agreement, stating no talks were underway. The piece mentions unrelated insurance and company references including John Maynard and Neely Greenhill.
U S Eighth Air Force planes attacked Germany today in the first notice. British bombers carried out a heavy night raid on two benzol plants near Gelsenkirchen and Herne in the Ruhr region.
Police Chief Sid Harper said the city detective’s condition is as good as could be expected after being shot three times and dumped from a car on Fourth Avenue. Savage, a patient at St Anthony's Hospital, had a rough night but showed slight improvement. Fugitives Eddie Thompson and Elbert Day face federal kidnapping charges linked to the shooting of Savage and the Miss Betty Shelton incident. Thompson, Day, and Billie Joe Kunkel also face Dyer Act charges over a stolen Omaha auto.
