Senator Taft of Ohio said he will vote to trim the European Recovery Program cost to four billion dollars while opposing cuts below that total. Congress targets April 10 for final passage of the Marshall Plan with the deadline shaping the approach against communism.
A full blizzard battered the Panhandle Plains with heavy snow and strong winds. Traffic and communications crippled as the storm raged and officials warned of continued brutal cold. Temperatures plummeted to near zero with a high forecast around 6 degrees tonight.
Prague reports Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk, 61, died after plunging from a bathroom window at his official residence. Officials say death appeared self inflicted in protest against the Communist coup. Masaryk, son of the republic's founder, had accepted reappointment to the ministry. He left a note about carrying on as foreign minister. Parliament opened to wreaths at his seat. Masaryk was formerly linked to Chicago industrialist Charles Crane through marriage.
A Dallas traveling salesman, Joe Carroll Taylor, was found guilty of driving while intoxicated by a county court jury who then changed the verdict to not guilty after deeming a six month driver license suspension excessive. Judge Northcatt instructed the panel that the suspension term should not be considered. Assistant county attorney John Peterson noted the shift as a juror explained the change.
Congress eyed three tax topics today. A committee debated broad income tax cuts and business relief while another discussed federal taxes for mariner relief and a third covered general outlay bills. The session included calls for substantial cuts to aid business.
Mrs. J. W. Crudgington of Madison underwent a left foot amputation at Northwest Texas Hospital this morning due to a regulatory condition. Her son John Crudgington, county auditor, said her condition was as good as can be expected early this afternoon.
March 10 report shows New Hampshire awards six GOP presidential delegates to Gov. Thomas E. Dewey and the remaining two to former Gov. Harold E. Stassen. Stassen leads in the April 6 Iowa primary race, as MacArthur enters the contest. McGrath and Reece push party unity while Wallace is attacked as impractical. MacArthur states occupation in Japan remains priority.
Grand Rapids, March 10 A heroic mother perished after saving two of her three children from a fire that swept the tile where she sought shelter after evictions. Sharon, 4, and Wayne, 3, were badly burned but alive. Dennis, 6, survived with injuries as the mother and family dog died on a porch roof before firefighters arrived.
Plans for improvements at English Field appear suitable to Aeronautics Administration engineers. City engineer Sianto Field and CAA engineer W P Frey reviewed plans showing runway lengthening and a new runway. Joint city and federal financing, work to begin in spring.
Cloudy with snow and strong northerly winds across Amarillo region. Snow ending by Thursday morning with continued cloudiness and colder temperatures. Panhandle South Plains and Pecos Valley see snow sleet and rain this afternoon with low temperatures from 2 to 32 degrees. Intermittent snow in New Mexico north and east with showers southwest this afternoon. Highs around 35 degrees and lows near 7 degrees after 6:30 AM.
Big Frank Cates questioned in Fort Worth linked to the death of a robbery suspect who knew too much. He was charged last May with a seven thousand dollar burglary at Amarillo Livestock Auction Co. office. Cates released on five thousand bond after transfer by Ranger White.
Washington march 10 Calvin Mettee a former GI chauffeur of Maj. Gen. Bennett E Meyers testified that Meyers offered him two thousand dollars to give false testimony at the general present federal court trial Meyers is charged with inducing Bleriot H Lemaire to lie at a Senate investigation about wartime profits from plane parts Meyers was to become No 2 purchasing agent for the Air Forces.
City officials purchased the Humphreys Highland water system from Cecil Humphrey who operated the system at 1004 Harrison. N W Moss said the cost was 11 and the system now serves Humphreys within city limits established earlier this year. The plan is to install larger mains for residential needs and fire pressure. The system includes over 16 thousand feet of 2 inch pipe, about 3.8 thousand feet of 5 inch pipe, and 200 water meters.
Washington March 10 The Senate voted down a measure to administer foreign relief through the United Nations. The outcome follows a debate over international aid and U N involvement.
