A raging blizzard paralyzed Silverton and the San Juan Basin cutting supply lines for a month old isolation. Mule teams from Needleton 16 miles away now carry limited goods while cold, snow, and sub zero winds sweep the country. Reports detail ships and autos stranded from Nova Scotia to New York while Ontario buries eight to ten feet of snow and Niagara Falls glimpses an early spring with wild swans.

A belated wintry blast brings light snow to south Texas cities and the Panhandle. Snowfall stretches from Corpus Christi to El Paso with snow likely in Northeast Texas tonight. Temperatures range from 14 to 20 degrees in Amarillo as the storm shifts north and east, turning to rain later.
Snow was moving toward Houston after the city’s second freeze in as many nights. Government meteorologist Lawrence Daingerfield said reports from Southwest Texas stations indicated a developing storm. Laredo reported seven inches of snow, Beeville and Del Rio two inches, and Corpus Christi a heavy snowfall with 34 degrees.

In a northern gale in the Gulf of Finland about 700 fishermen and 100 horses were stranded on floating ice floes near Suursaari Island between Helsinki and Leningrad. About 100 fishermen were rescued by boats, while an icebreaker could not approach due to thick ice. Two airplanes from Viipuri supplied food to the castaways.
