Clear weather spurs search for a fast siimer missing with nine aboard after a March 1 crash in the mountains. D Welsh of Kansas City, superintendent of the western division of Transcontinent and Western Air, Inc., said the clear conditions are most encouraging for locating the aircraft and passengers.
Sixteen men stranded in a Rio Grande freight train on Lizzard Head Pass 11 000 feet high in the San Miguel Mountains were rescued by a rotary snow plow train from Denver & Rio Grande Western. The party had lived on coffee and onion seed for four days after drifts 10 to 20 feet trapped the six remaining locomotives. A prior relief party reached four miles from the train and ferried food forward on toboggans, then hiked in on snowshoes. The rescue occurred despite the danger of the Nigger Head snowslide that annually blankets the pass.
A tall WPA worker confessed to the nude masked attacks on two girls, including a 7-year-old, and was sent to state prison for safekeeping. Sheriff Powell said the man admitted the assault and a February 26 attempt and signed a statement.
In Wichita Falls a white front drug store owned by W. W. Gilmore was looted last night leaving only bare walls. Loss is estimated at 2,000 dollars with no insurance. An iron safe containing narcotics and cash was found abandoned in a pasture east of town.
Mrs. Iona Belle Bowles, 72, dubbed the most mother-in-law, spends three weeks with each of her 16 married children totaling a year of visits. The Hermosa Beach parade highlighted her large clan, with in laws and offspring from Abilene Amarillo Crown Point and Los Angeles among those present.
In St Joseph on March 9 a witness identified the wrong man in court. Justice of the Peace Billy Wyatt asked George Burge to point out the assailant who attacked him and robbed him of 180 dollars. Burge identified Assistant Prosecutor Ernest Binnicker, not Glen Reid who stood trial.
Aklavik crews report flying over 3000 miles in Alaska seeking Sigismund Levanevsky and five companions last seen after a Moscow to Alaska flight. They covered mountains from 141E to 154W, reached the Old Crow area, and concluded no wreck sighting. They praised weather and village aid at Old Crow while babies born in the area were noted.
Dr Paul Popenoel of the Los Angeles Institute of Family Relations proposes automatic wage increases of 15 percent for each child born to a family. He argues that 15 percent of income is needed to raise a child and urges collaboration among educational and ministerial agencies to promote this policy.
Shanghai report says Japanese diplomats seek a neutral state to urge new negotiations with China. Observers foresee a political pause before a push toward Hankow across the Yellow River while Chinese defenses along strategic fronts resist with heavy shelling. Hongkong circles doubt Beijing would seek peace now, despite ongoing moves with British and Italian backing.
