A Globe report by David Rasco details a delayed firefighting effort as a delegation works along the blaze with wet sacks brooms and spades. The Bennetts place was reportedly not in immediate danger while about eight more people, including Sunray High School members, assist at the scene. One man complains of a stiff back as the effort continues.
A player had participated in a basketball game with an independent team before an ensuing fire event. Authorities investigated the sequence of actions surrounding the incident and the role of the player in the unfolding events.
Volunteers from Dumas, aided by radio equipped mobile units from pipeline firms, fought a fierce inferno threatening the Texoma Pumping Plant. Backfires and careful stationing of crews from city hall helped containment as winds reached 25 to 30 miles per hour.
A prairie blaze that caused about a quarter million dollars in damage in Moore County reignited southeast of Dumas after an all-night battle. Leroy Little, 36, Sunray Fire Department chief, died at 4:15 AM at Moore County Memorial Hospital from burns suffered near the Texoma Natural Gas Co Plant No. 22, 18 miles east of Dumas. He is survived by his wife and two sons, ages 17 and 14 months.
A prairie fire raced across 100 square miles of Moore County land, driven by 45 mph winds. Firefighters from Dumas and Dalhart battled backfires to shield the Texoma gas plant as volunteers evacuated 85 workers and two men were hospitalized for burns. Estimated property loss ran into the quarter of a million dollars, and one man died from burns with another seriously injured.
H J Bice of Amarillo a known insecticide manufacturer announces bid in the 18th district race to replace Gene Worley. He plans to run in the general and the Democratic primary in July pending Worley’s possible resignation.
The House Labor Committee rejected a Kennedy proposal to extend federal aid to parochial and private schools to cover bus service for non public school children. The 16 to 9 vote was in a closed door session highlighting ongoing religious disputes over aid. Kennedy said he would not vote for the bill.
Sweden accused Russia of seizing Swedish fishing ships in the Baltic beyond territorial waters and said Stockholm takes an extremely serious view of the incidents. The report names Sweden as the initiator of the protest and cites acts affecting Swedish vessels.
Amarillo School Board approves a three million dollar bond to build three new elementary schools, enlarge high and junior high facilities, and add rooms and cafeteria auditorium space. Voters will decide April 1 alongside two school board seats as no new high school is planned.
Wills district selects no exact site yet for new schools. Plans include a 13 room school with cafeteria auditorium. San Jacinto School at 400 Carolina will convert four classrooms to the combined facility. Summit School at 901 North Florida to add two or more classrooms. Southwest Amarillo proposes a 16 room elementary between 38th and 40th and Parker area.
The Amarillo school board released a formal statement endorsing a three million dollar bond issue to fund building and improvement programs. After months of study including enrollment projections for ten years, UT survey insights, and public input, they deem the bond essential to address elementary growth and high school needs, with upgrades to libraries, study areas, visual aids, shops, and facilities.
State witnesses described finding Charles Freeman wounded on the floor of Kelley Oil Company station at 3822 North East Eighth after a shooting on Oct. 6, 1949. Freeman died minutes later as Donald Gene Young and Dwight Hoskins face murder with malice charges. Hoskins has prior conviction for 35 years. Kelley testified he arrived around 12 45 AM, Freeman alive but unable to breathe, pockets turned out, cash register later showed a $31.11 loss, and Freeman did not identify a shooter.
Amarillo and surrounding areas faced gusts up to 30 miles per hour with visibility dropping to 3 miles at the Amarillo Air Terminal and as low as a quarter mile in parts of eastern Colorado and western Kansas. Forecaster P W Reynolds of the US Weather Bureau expects clearing skies, cooler conditions, and little precipitation through the week with near normal temperatures. A dust storm yesterday near the Panhandle spurred a prairie fire near Dumas.

Colder today with strong winds and blowing dust. today’s high around 55 and low near 27. Cooler tomorrow with a high near 52 and lows in the 20s. Panhandle and South Plains tonight expected 22 to 32.
Dalhart 18 year old Keith Green exhibited Peanuts, a Hereford of 905 pounds, to win the grand champion in the baby beef class at Amarillo. Judge W J Largent selected Green’s entry over Perry Walker’s Red, 730 pounds. Meantime Ferrall Meeks, Dalhart, previously won top honors in Blue Ribbon Sale placement. Perry Walker, currently on the rugged show circuit, placed second and third in other classes and plans more shows in Odessa.
