A discussion on relations between laborers and contractors in Amarillo surfaces as a six month dispute comes to a head, with statements from Mr. Ramey and Mr. Nicholson highlighting tensions among local workers and employers.
The 12 day picket line at Amarillo Iron Works was lifted pending return of company officials to resume talks. I J Ironside said negotiations would resume Tuesday and that preferential hiring was the dispute’s key point. Company attorney Judge Hugh Cooper stated negotiations had not been broken off.
Testimony began in the Laurence Boyd Weatherby murder trial with a key defense witness found fit after a hospital consult. Dr Dowling described three bullet wounds and their lethal potential while an X ray display was approved for jury viewing. The panel, formed after a long session, includes members from Amarillo Motor, Franklin Serum, Amarillo Garage, and several local businesses.
The White House announced that Margaret Truman will debut as a singer on the Sunday Evening Hour from 7 to 8 p m Sunday night. The Detroit-originated program will be carried by Station KFDA across the American Broadcasting Co network. Truman and her voice teacher Mrs T J Strickler of Kansas City are in Detroit preparing for the broadcast.
The Supreme Court ruled 7 to 2 that John L Lewis and the United Mine Workers were guilty of contempt for defying a court order ending the fall coal strike. The decision upheld a $10,000 personal fine for Lewis and cut the union fine to $700,000, with a $2,800,000 penalty to be reapplied if the union again strikes before March 31. Justices Murphy and Rutledge dissented. Black and Douglas dissented on the size and conditions of fines. Vinson called Lewis' stance studied and deliberate non compliance and stressed the seriousness to constitutional government and national welfare.
Lola Marie Dryer 23 of Kansas City arrived in Shannon Ireland seeking a short visit and to rejoin her husband Lt John Cliver stationed in Stephenville Newfoundland. Weather diverted her Transcontinental flight and immigration granted a cordial welcome despite missing documents as she expressed a wish to return to Newfoundland.
In Jerusalem on March 6 British forces rounded up twenty five Jewish underground leaders during martial law and flew them to Kenya. The capture includes prominent figures believed to be among active soldiers. identities remain undisclosed. An Irgun attack on a British camp at Hedera left three British soldiers and two attackers wounded.
Secretary of State Marshall lands at Orly airport en route to Moscow for the foreign ministers meeting. He travels Washington to Bermuda to the Azores, with Jefferson Caffery greeting him and hosting lunch. Auriol hosts dinner as Marshall plans talks with Ramadier before Berlin and Germany occupation discussions.
Gruver from the Panhandle toppled Pettus of South Texas 48 to 22 in a state high school basketball tournament opener. Gruver raced to a 12 to 4 lead by the first period and widened the margin as the game progressed.
A Dalhart County jury convicted Vernon Carl McDaniel, 39, of criminally assaulting a seven year old girl in late January. He received a sentence of 50 years and a day in prison.
President Truman warned that failing to reduce trade barriers risks economic war and spoke at Baylor University after receiving an honorary Doctor of Laws. He urged bipartisan support, called tariffs and isolationism outdated, and stressed the policy as a cornerstone for peace.
Principal R B Norman released a new student poll on drinking at Amarillo High School, arguing the Sandstorm survey was biased. The poll covered 1468 students across seniors juniors and sophomores, showing 32 percent of boys and 7 percent of girls reported drinking.
Chicago White Sox rookie Richard Carlton Woodring was arrested in Pasadena California on charges tied to a 1783 dollar worthless check for a Willys Jeep Station Wagon. The check was written to Harvey Southworth of Southworth Willys Company, with charges filed February 27. The car marked the company’s Feb 15 showroom opening.
London reports a fuel crisis as a blizzard snarls transport and halts coal production. The Daily Herald warns of further checks unless coal stocks improve while Attlee convenes the emergency coal cabinet to address the disruption across 120 blocked highways, 40 railway branch lines, and 33 South Wales mines halted by snow and ice.
The junior live stock sale opened with K S Adams of Phillips Petroleum bidding $2.66 per pound for the grand champion baby beef calf, the highest price ever paid in the Panhandle. The Oklahoma owned calf sold to Mrs Betty Childers. Panhandle champion sold for $1.10 per pound. Other notable bids included a $2.25 per pound grand champion pig, and sheep averages around 31 cents per pound.
Weatherman H C Winburn reports light snow across the Panhandle this afternoon and tonight with little moisture and minimal driving hazard. Temperatures dip to near 16 tonight and 29 this afternoon in parts while the South Plains may see slightly heavier fall. Brownville records 67 degrees while Amarillo and Pampa hit 16. a mix of sleet and freezing rain noted in Abilene Big Spring area.
Cloudy and cold with light snow this afternoon and tonight across Amarillo and West Texas. Lows near 16 tonight, 14 to 18 in the Panhandle, 18 to 22 in South Plains, higher in lower Big Bend. Friday cloudy and cooler with highs around 41 in most areas.
