Rhine Front Crumbles as Allied Forces Break German Defenses

American and Canadian troops drive toward the Rhine from Cologne to Wesel, seize crossings, destroy bridges, and push into Cologne outskirts. Patton’s forces advance along the Kyll and reach the Rhine while Bonn and surrounding areas near collapse. German defenses withdraw to urban pockets as Allied air and ground pressure intensifies.

Tax Bills Would Provide Funds For State School Expansion

In Austin on March 6 the Legislature discussed a plan to raise about 1.7 million dollars yearly to finance state college building programs excluding UT and A and M. Senate and House resolutions urged a constitutional amendment to allow an ad valorem tax up to five cents per 100 valuation for financing, reforming the seven cent pension levy for Confederate veterans as pensioners decline and the fund holds a large surplus.

Churchill At Home After Rhine Crossing Talks

Prime Minister Churchill trod recovered German soil on a weekend Western Front tour. He returned to London and announced talks with Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and other Allied commanders about plans to cross the Rhine and advance into Germany to link up with the Russians. Much of his continental travel occurred on German territory.

Coldest Jan Morning Hits Amarillo Area

The 8am temperature registered 13.6 degrees, the coldest this winter in the region. The chill covered northeast Panhandle but spared Amarillo, with Canyon about 20 degrees milder. Soviet announces capture of Grudziadz in Polish corridor

Advance in Italy yields gains near Bologna and hills

U S Fifth Army forces captured Biscora seven miles southwest of Bologna after advances of 400 to 800 yards along the Pistoia Bologna highway. Hill 375 and Hill 476 dominate the area as American troops push toward the eastern Florence Bologna route while the 10th Mountain Division presses west of highway 64. Allied fliers report movement in German rear areas and traffic along the Po Valley highway to Bologna.

Weather forecast for Amarillo and West Texas regions

RAF Bombers Hit Salzbergen Refineries in Large Raid

Lancasters led by Mustangs and Spitfires bombed Salzbergen oil refineries 27 miles northwest of Muenster. An RAF air assault involved over 1,100 planes with targets including Chemnitz as smoke rose from the factory district.
